Snow on Table Mountain and the rest of the Western Cape

No wonder it is sooo cold.

The Western Cape was transformed into a winter wonderland over the weekend, with stunning pictures of snow on Table Mountain, Franschhoek, the Hottentots Hollands Mountain Range, Ceres, and more.

And because of all the rain and snow, it is looking superb.

Life goes on as usual for our fellow creatures, so beautiful in their many shapes and forms.

Every year we see the same species returning to St James in the same sequence. Quadricolour Nudibranchs first (a few posts ago), then the Velvet Nudibranchs (my personal favourite) and shortly after that the warty pleurobrachs arrive.
This week I saw all three happily going about their business. The great slug migration is in process. Pop down to St James with a mask and snorkel and see if you can spot them.

Orcas in False Bay today!

AND, how fortunate we were to be hired by a media house with the necessary ES permits, to get out & report on the sighting..
There were 6, possibly 7 animals foraging in the deeper waters in Buffels Bay. One Male, 3 or 4 females and 2 calfs (one very young). Weโ€™re not sure what they were targeting, but there were many seals & birds around. Again, as weโ€™ve noticed before, the seals werenโ€™t the slightest bit afraid of the killer whales and they showed no interest in them (luckily).
We spent a few hours with them, of which they spent little time on the surface. On a few occasions we thought that they had given us the slip, but then re-appeared a distance away.
The highlight was the little calf who entertained us with a few beautiful breaches.

What great timing! I got up from my Office to go and get some coffee and noticed a strange stripe across the the bay. When I went outside to take a look, there in the distance was a huge pod of Dolphin, racing along. Sorry no photo. โ˜น๏ธ

Yesterday afternoon I answer a phone call and get asked by a fellow South African "What is your booking procedure during the lockdown?" I ask " when do you do you want to stay" thinking June/July maybe, the answer, " tonight!" I had to disappoint the young lady, we are closed as we are not regarded as an essential service, but I was quite shocked that anyone would even think of going to stay in a "stranger's home"" during this time, the health risks, never mind that it is against the law. ๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿ˜ท Stay safely at home, Cape Town will still be here, it's not going anywhere either, and we look forward to welcoming you all when this is all over

West Coast flowers in full bloom

It's blooming wonderful, again.

As the last of winter fades away, flowers along the West Coast begin blossoming with the first tantalising glimpses of spring. According to the West Coast National Park (WCNP), its Potsberg Section has been opened for the Annual Flower Season from August 1 until September 30.

Awesome tour!

The Southern Right Whale Tour of Cape Town's Stormy Seas:

The early sailors hugged this coastline en-route to the most southern tip of Africa, where ships and whales were both at great risk. Venture from the earliest whaling stations on a very full day tour along breathtaking coastal scenery, mountains and farmlands. Year round this tour is a must, whale season or not!

Starting at the historic Kalk Bay Whaling Station, we take you past the beaches of False Bay, past Wolfgat Nature reserve, through the coastal towns of Macassar, where Sheik Yussuf was exiled. Strand & Gordonโ€™s Bay, premier beach resort with boat harbours, holiday homes and horse breeding stables. The botanical Garden of Bettyโ€™s Bay boasts the famous Red Disa, hard to find yet well worth the effort if you are so inclined.

All the way round this diversified coastline you may view Southern Right Whales (July to November) while year-round the Brydeโ€™s Whale and dolphin may be spotted. Hermanus, Walker Bay and its high cliffs suit whale watching, lunch overlooking the fishing fleet followed by a visit to the historical harbour, craft market and Whale Museum. Homeward bound past historic farms in the Valley of Heaven and Earth, significant to exiled lepers, over mountain passes and a panoramic view of the whole Cape Peninsula. This route is popular all year round, with or without whale season, due to the scenery and variation in seaside towns and coastline.
