Week 2 — Tires & chassis: tread, pressure,
Inspection Checklist (Non-Braked Trailer)
Once the wheel bearings have been serviced or replaced, check the following:
* Ensure the hub rotates freely without excessive resistance or noise.
* Confirm there is no excessive wheel bearing play.
* Check the grease cap is fitted securely.
* Inspect for any grease leaks around the hub and seal.
* Tighten the wheel nuts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Inspect the suspension components for:
* Worn, cracked, or broken leaf springs.
* Loose or worn spring eye bushes.
* Damaged or loose U-bolts and spring mounting hardware.
* Bent or damaged axle.
* Signs of corrosion, cracks, or fatigue around suspension mounting points.

Check each tyre for:
* Correct tyre pressure.
* Biggest cause of tyre failure is both under and over inflation.
* Adequate tread depth and even tread wear. (in SA it is 1mm at all points on the tyre)
* Cuts, cracks, bulges, or other sidewall damage.
* Embedded objects such as nails or screws.
* Matching tyre sizes and load ratings suitable for the trailer.

Inspect the trailer chassis for:
* Cracks, bends, or structural damage.
* Rust or corrosion that could affect structural integrity.
* Loose or missing bolts, fasteners, and mounting hardware.
* Secure coupling and safety chain attachment points.
* Damage or wear to the drawbar and A-frame.
* Secure mudguards, lights, reflectors, and registration plate mounting.
Before returning the trailer to service:
* Spin each wheel to ensure smooth operation.
* Confirm all fasteners are tight.
* Perform a short test tow and recheck the wheel bearings and wheel nut torque after the initial run.
