🐾 The bush has a way of telling stories… if you know where to look! 👀

We came across these rather interesting tracks on the greenbelt at Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, and they were a lovely reminder that you don’t always have to see an animal to know it’s been around.

Sometimes, the evidence is right there beneath your feet!

But can you work out who left these tracks?

Here’s a little tip: when identifying animal tracks, don’t just look at the footprints. Look at the whole picture.

How many toes can you see? Are there claw marks? How are the footprints positioned? And what’s that rather interesting line running between them? 🤔

Each little detail is a clue, and when you start putting them together, a story begins to emerge.

As October brings warmer days to the Lowveld, we’re starting to see more reptile activity. These fascinating creatures rely on warmth from their surroundings to regulate their body temperature, so the changing season brings more opportunities to spot them.

💚 When last did you give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing?

Not catching up on emails. Not ticking things off a to-do list. Not planning what needs to happen tomorrow.
Just… nothing.

It’s funny how we’ve become so good at keeping ourselves busy that sometimes even relaxing feels like something we need to schedule! 😄

October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s a good reminder that looking after ourselves isn’t always about doing more.

Sometimes, it’s about allowing ourselves to do a little less.

To slow down. To get outside. To enjoy a quiet morning without feeling the need to fill every minute.

And perhaps that’s one of the things we appreciate most about life here in the bush.

At UmnDeni Africa Bush Villas, there’s room for those quieter moments.

A cup of coffee on the patio while the birds get on with their morning conversations. An afternoon with a book beside the pool. Or simply sitting outside, watching the light change as another Lowveld day draws to a close.

🐇 Sometimes, being a good mother means keeping your distance!

It might seem like an unusual parenting strategy, but for scrub hares, it’s all about keeping their babies safe.
Unlike rabbits, scrub hares don’t dig burrows or raise their young underground. Instead, they use shallow resting places in the vegetation, known as forms, where they can remain remarkably well hidden.

And here’s where things get interesting…

A mother scrub hare doesn’t spend her day sitting beside her little one. She generally keeps her distance, returning briefly to nurse her baby before moving away again.

Why?

Because staying close could attract unwanted attention from predators. By keeping her visits short, she reduces the chances of leading danger straight to her youngster.
It’s a fascinating example of how wildlife has adapted to survive in the bush.

We were lucky enough to capture this lovely moment of a mother scrub hare returning to feed her little one. ❤️

If you’ve joined us for an early evening drive along the greenbelt on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, you’ve probably spotted scrub hares becoming active as the sun begins to set.

A little Hoedspruit find worth knowing about. 🥯🌿

One of the nice things about staying self-catering is that you can cook when you feel like it… and make the most of Hoedspruit’s local food spots when you don’t.

Taystys is one of our latest favourites. Started by one of the younger members of our Hoedspruit community, they make seriously good bagels and sourdough sandwiches — fresh, generous and perfect for breakfast or lunch.

It’s an easy stop if you’re heading out for the day, or somewhere to pick up lunch before heading back to the villa for a lazy afternoon by the pool.

And conveniently, Plato is right next door if a good coffee needs to be part of the plan. ☕️

We love seeing young local businesses like this popping up in Hoedspruit — and we love having another good recommendation to pass on to our guests.

Because self-catering doesn’t always have to mean cooking. Sometimes it means choosing exactly where lunch comes from. 😄

Some days in Hoedspruit are made for exploring. 🌿

An early start for a game drive. A drive out to the Blyde. Lunch somewhere along the way. Perhaps a stop in town before heading back as the afternoon starts to cool.

If the braai is going, there really should be braaibroodjies. 🔥

Today is Heritage Day, and we couldn’t think of a better excuse to share one of those simple South African favourites that belongs beside the braai.

A braaibroodjie is essentially a toasted sandwich cooked over the coals — but anyone who grew up eating them will tell you it’s much more than that. 😄

For a traditional version, you’ll need:

🍞 White bread
🧈 Butter
🧀 Cheddar cheese
🍅 Sliced tomato
🧅 Onion
🥭 Chutney
🧂 Salt & pepper

Butter the outside of your bread, spread chutney on the inside and add cheese, tomato and onion. Season, close your sandwiches and place them in a hinged braai grid.

Braai over moderate coals, turning regularly, until the bread is beautifully golden and crisp and the cheese has melted.

Then comes the difficult part: waiting for them to cool down enough to eat. 😉
