Spot the sparrowhawk. 👀

At first glance… just a tree.

Look again.

Tucked away among the branches is a juvenile Little Sparrowhawk, sitting quietly and watching the world go by. (Probably watching us too, camera and all.)

It’s one of the things we love most about the estate. The bush doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it whispers. A bird hidden in a tree. A duiker slipping through the undergrowth. A chameleon crossing the road. The more you slow down, the more you notice.

It’s not the pool.
Not the villa.
Not even the wildlife.

It’s that first moment the fire catches.

Dinner can wait. Nobody’s checking their phone. The only sounds are the crackle of the flames, birds settling in for the night, and something calling out in the bush that you can’t quite place. Somehow, not knowing is part of the magic.

There’s something about sitting around a fire that reminds you how little you actually need.

It’s funny how it’s the simplest moments that stay with you the longest.

Ever seen a caterpillar traffic jam?

We spotted this one while driving through the estate the other day — a long line of caterpillars, nose to tail, following each other like they're queuing for the Kruger gate on a long weekend.

It's actually pretty clever. They're processionary caterpillars, and they travel like this using silk trails and a bit of gentle nudging, so nobody gets left behind. Safety in numbers, bush style.

They’re on their way to burrow into the soil, where they’ll pupate before emerging as moths. The adult stage only lasts a short while, so this remarkable journey is really the main event.

One thing though - don’t touch. Those tiny hairs are part of their defence system and can cause quite an itchy reaction. They’re fascinating to watch, but best admired from a respectful distance… just like most things in the bush. 😉

One for anyone who loves leopards… 🐆

On Wednesday, 19 August at 20:00, Africa Geographic premieres Spots on the Line - a new documentary following the Ingwe Research Program and their work to better understand leopard movements and reduce road fatalities in the Greater Kruger.

It’s a story that hits close to home. Living on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, we’re reminded that we share this landscape with these incredible cats. It’s a privilege - but it also comes with the responsibility of helping to protect them.

The documentary explores how tracking technology, research and citizen science are working together to make a real difference.

If you’re in Hoedspruit, there’s an in-person premiere, or you can join the global livestream from wherever you are.

An engineering wonder, strung up in the morning sun. 🕸️

Look closely at this — a tiny, domed web, woven so finely it looks like a little hammock of silk slung between the thorns. A small piece of art, and easy to walk straight past.

This looks like the work of a tent-web spider (Cyrtophora) — a small spider that builds these intricate, finely-meshed domes and then sits quietly underneath, waiting. Unlike the classic wheel-shaped orb web, the tent web is a dense horizontal sheet held up by a maze of supporting threads: remarkably strong, and beautifully made.

You’ll find them all along the green belt, and early morning is the time to look. As the first sun catches the overnight dew, dozens of these little domes light up and glisten across the grass and bushes — there one moment, almost invisible the next as the dew dries.

Proof, again, that some of the bush’s best sightings are the tiniest ones. You just have to slow down and look. 🌿
