A Busy, Beautiful Week at Raptor

This week we had the joy of welcoming guests from the Netherlands, France and Germany — and the bush certainly rose to the occasion.

Our game drives delivered those magical moments that leave a lasting imprint on your soul… 🐆 A beautiful leopard resting high in a tree, A group of very expectant female lions, soon to bring the next generation into the world, 🦌 A gentle symbiotic scene — oxpeckers grooming a kudu in perfect harmony, ☀️ And with the heat soaring, the animals got wonderfully creative… including an impala finding the perfect shady spot under the umbrella at Hippo Cottage’s swimming pool.

You’ll return home convinced that traffic lights are inferior to giraffes blocking the road • You’ll judge people harshly for panicking over a gecko — meanwhile you survived a buffalo stare‑down before breakfast • You’ll realise your “city survival skills” are useless unless they include tyre‑changing, snake‑spotting, or braai‑mastery • You’ll side‑eye anyone who complains about slow Wi‑Fi — because you’ve tasted the sweet freedom of no signal at all • You’ll start calling your colleagues “herd members” and secretly ranking them by who would last longest in the bush • You’ll miss the staff more than your neighbours, because at least we don’t mow lawns at 6am • You’ll find yourself sniffing the air for elephant scent… in the parking lot • You’ll consider replacing your alarm clock with a francolin

🌿 Safari Surprises at Raptor Retreat 🐾

Some weeks in the bush arrive quietly… and then deliver the most unexpected wonders. This week reminded us once again why a safari is never predictable — and always unforgettable.

✨ Our Game Drive Highlights: 🦒 A beautiful stretch of giraffes browsing peacefully in the morning light 🐕 A small, energetic pack of wild dogs appearing out of nowhere — a true privilege to witness 🐆 Another regal sighting of our iconic Question Mark Leopard, moving with that effortless elegance only a leopard possesses 🦌 A rare Sharpe’s Grysbok — a shy, seldom‑seen treasure of the bush 🐃 And finally, a buffalo herd gathered at the Olifants River while we enjoyed our morning bush coffee

It’s moments like these — unexpected, unscripted, and deeply magical — that stay with our guests long after they’ve left the reserve.

Out here, you never know what waits around the next corner… and that’s exactly what makes a safari so special. 💚

Every now and then, a review appears that doesn’t reflect the heart, history, or reality of who we are. For the sake of clarity — and for the guests who have trusted us for 14 years — we want to gently reaffirm what the Raptor Retreat experience truly is.

Each unit has its own private dining table, and most meals are enjoyed on our Main Deck, surrounded by the quiet magic of the bush.
Our rooms are cleaned daily, and plunge pools are maintained with care — though living in an unfenced reserve means wildlife sometimes visits them, a moment many guests treasure.

This week we had the pleasure of hosting Francios Smit, our 1st Runner‑Up from the Kruger Magazine Photo Competition we proudly sponsor — and the bush delivered a show worthy of a true wildlife artist.

During one unforgettable game drive, Francios captured a dramatic sequence featuring one of our leopards climbing effortlessly up a tree with the remainder of its impala carcass, then settling into the branches with its prize, and finally, a slow, lazy yawn — the kind only a leopard can make look regal.

These moments remind us why the African bush is such a powerful storyteller. Every branch, every shadow, every breath of wind holds a little magic… and Francios framed it beautifully.

🔥Weekly Boma Dinner — The Magic Guests Look Forward To
Under the African night sky, our boma becomes a private sanctuary — firelight dancing across crystal glasses, soft laughter rising between guests who, just hours before, were strangers from different corners of the world.

Every week, this is one of the moments our guests look forward to most. A night where the bush slows down, the flames burn bright, and stories flow as easily as the w**e.

Our signature boma dinner is crafted with care and tradition: artisan boerewors, premium cuts of steak, roasted potatoes, corn on the cob, vibrant beetroot salad, and the grand finale… our beloved Amarula Pudding, a dessert that has become a Raptor Retreat legend.

But the true magic isn’t only in the flavours — it’s in the feeling. The unity. The shared wonder. The way the bush weaves strangers together and turns a simple meal into an unforgettable evening.
