🌿🦜 KAMBERG NATURE RESERVE – FAUNA AND FLORA FOCUS

One of the true highlights of a visit to Kamberg Nature Reserve is the chance to spot the remarkable Ground Woodpecker (Geocolaptes olivaceus) πŸ‘€βœ¨. This fascinating bird is one of only three ground-dwelling woodpeckers in the entire world! 🌍

Here's everything you need to know about this iconic Drakensberg resident:

πŸ“πŸŒ„ Distribution & Habitat
The Ground Woodpecker is endemic to southern Africa and is found in South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ‡±πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡Ώ. Its range runs in a broad swath from the Cape Peninsula and Namaqualand in the southwest, all the way to Mpumalanga in the northeast. It prefers rather barren, steep, boulder-strewn slopes in relatively cool hilly and mountainous areasβ€”a perfect description of the terrain you'll find here at Kamberg πŸ”οΈπŸͺ¨.

🐜🍽️ Diet
As their name suggests, these woodpeckers spend much of their time on the ground. Their diet consists mainly of ants, along with their eggs, larvae, and pupae πŸ₯šπŸ›. They use their long, sticky tongues πŸ‘… to extract these from between rocks, dead wood, or directly from the ground. One study recorded a staggering 53 different species of ants as prey! 😲

πŸ‘€πŸͺΆ Appearance & Behaviour
The Ground Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in the region, reaching up to 30 cm in length πŸ“. It has greyish-olive upperparts, pale eyes, and a pink-washed breast. They are usually found in pairs or small groups and are best located by their loud, raucous two-note call πŸ”Š (chik-ree, chik-ree). They often perch upright on large boulders or termite mounds, peering over rocks at intruders πŸ‘€. Unlike many other woodpeckers, they are highly terrestrial and prefer open, lightly vegetated country 🌾.

πŸ₯šπŸ‘ Breeding
Ground Woodpeckers breed in spring and early summer (August to November) πŸŒΈβ˜€οΈ. They excavate tunnels in vertical soil banks, such as stream banks or road cuttings, where they lay their eggs. At Kamberg, a pair was once spotted flying out of holes in a road cuttingβ€”a wonderful sighting for any visitor! 😍

βš οΈπŸ›‘οΈ Conservation Status
This species is currently classified as Near Threatened, with a reported 26.9% decline in its Area of Occupancy over the past 15 years πŸ“‰. This makes our work at Kambergβ€”protecting the habitat these birds depend onβ€”more important than ever πŸ’šπŸ™.

πŸ‘€πŸ₯Ύ Next time you're exploring the rocky slopes of Kamberg Nature Reserve, keep an eye out for these charismatic birds. Whether they're sunbathing β˜€οΈ, calling 🎢, or foraging for ants, they're sure to delight!

Thank you to our guests Nele and Lars, for sharing a video and images from their hike to Aasvoelkrans Cave last week. Just look how crystal clear the water is! At the time, there were a few patches of snow, so the temperature of the water might be on the nippy side!
Still, Spring is on the way and we can't wait!

Visiting Highmoor Nature Reserve after the snow this week. Some of our guests even braved a hike to the dams which I'm sure would have been incredible, seeing as there were no other footprints, except theirs!
As you can see, Scooch our Heeler also got stuck in to his first taste of snow!
