SOLES 4 SOULS
While some kids prefer the freedom of playing and running around barefoot, this simple, carefree action doesn’t represent freedom for some. Even more so, in the wet, winter months in Cape Town, when the social and economic divides in our society are even more apparent in images of those who have and those who don’t. In the community of Ocean View, it is not uncommon to see kids walking to school with broken, gapping shoes or even no shoes at all. It’s a heart sore picture, particularly as kids becomes teenagers, when the value or benefit of shoes translate into self-awareness and esteem issues, especially in a school environment. This is a crucial time in teenagers’ development as their awareness of the world and their place in it is related to how they see themselves, albeit as a skewed comparison to their peers. But this is their reality, and a local bike club, the Sons of Thunder Motorcycle Club are trying to change that.
On Freedom Day, 27th April 2016, the Sons of Thunder Motorcycle Club will drive this change in Ocean View, with support from the larger biking community, their collective network of local businesses, family and friends. In collaboration with NPO Royal Kids, the Sons of Thunder will host the 4th annual Soles 4 Souls school shoe drive. The aim of this function is to hand over a minimum of 500 pairs of sponsored school shoes to scholars who attend Ocean View Primary School and Ocean View Secondary School before winter sets in.
Bikers around Cape Town will ride in solidarity to create awareness of children in need who, despite their circumstances, still make the journey to school in broken shoes or without. It’s a different walk to freedom for these kids; but one that the biking community wholeheartedly supports.
The bike run will also raise awareness of biking safety and affirms the role of the biking fraternity’s goodwill in serving the needs of local communities.
We ask businesses, community social groups and individuals to be part of this change and assist us in reaching our goal of donating at least 500 pairs of school shoes to a community in need. You are invited to please sponsor one or more pairs at only R120 per pair. To assist or for more information, please contact Garreth Charles, Chairperson of Sons of Thunder MC, on 083 485 1667 or Danolene Johanessen, Managing Director of Soles 4 Souls on 060 365 0733.
