The sound of hippos calling across the Luangwa Valley is one of Africa’s great wilderness reminders — deep, powerful and impossible to forget.

Beneath clear blue skies and the rich beauty of Upper Lupande, these moments speak to the untamed spirit of the valley. The rivers remain full of life, the landscapes are beginning their slow transformation from emerald green to winter gold, and wildlife moves to the timeless rhythm of the bush. This is the wild heart of the Luangwa.

This is not just a place you visit.
It is a place you feel.

Welcome to the Luangwa Valley.

In the Luangwa Valley, conservation is not only about protecting wildlife and wild landscapes—it is also about supporting the people who live alongside them.

At Muchinga Adventures Ltd, more than 50% of all edible meat from our safaris is donated and delivered free of charge each year to local communities and to the scouts who work tirelessly in the field. For many families, this provides a valuable and reliable source of protein—something that is not always easily accessible in remote areas.

This is one of the often-unseen contributions of sustainable, regulated hunting. Quotas are set through scientific assessment, ensuring that wildlife populations remain healthy and resilient. Within this framework, the use of harvested animals is maximised—nothing is wasted, and the benefits are shared.

By providing legally sourced meat, pressure on illegal bushmeat hunting is reduced, helping to protect wildlife populations over the long term. At the same time, it strengthens relationships with communities, ensuring that conservation is something that is supported, valued, and lived.

For Managing Director Johnny du Plooy and the team, this has always been a quiet but important part of the work—ensuring that conservation delivers real, tangible value on the ground.

We remain mindful that this is not something to speak loudly about, but rather something to do consistently, respectfully, and with purpose.

Because when conservation works well, it benefits both wildlife and people.

As the emerald season begins to soften into winter, the Luangwa Valley reveals one of its most beautiful transformations — rich green landscapes slowly giving way to golden plains, clear skies and the quiet rhythm of the dry season ahead.

Golden light settles across the plains as zebra move quietly through the winter grass and giraffe drift between the trees. Hippo voices echo across the river as day fades into dusk.

This is Upper Lupande at one of the most beautiful times of the season — wild, peaceful and alive with less movement.

Beyond the extraordinary wildlife sightings lies something even more meaningful: a landscape protected through conservation, community partnership and sustainable wildlife management.

Every season tells a story here.
Of wilderness. Of balance. Of Africa as it was always meant to be.

Welcome to the Luangwa Valley.
Welcome to Muchinga Adventures.

Some of the most important moments in conservation are not the ones seen on safari, but the ones that happen quietly, behind the scenes.

There is a long and dedicated history in the work of Muchinga Adventures Ltd. Long before a guest arrives in camp, efforts continue to protect wildlife and wild landscapes, making these experiences possible. From supporting anti-poaching operations and intelligence-led efforts that have led to the removal of illegal poaching fi****ms, to standing alongside dedicated scouts on patrol, this commitment has always been a part of who we are.

For Managing Director Johnny du Plooy, this work is not separate from safari, it is the foundation of it. His decade-long role as an Honorary Wildlife Police Officer reflects a deep, ongoing partnership with those on the front lines of conservation.

Every safari booked with Muchinga Adventures contributes to this bigger purpose. It supports the men and women who safeguard these wild areas, strengthens anti-poaching efforts, and helps ensure that wildlife continues to thrive for generations to come.

We are proud to play a small part in something much bigger than ourselves.

Because here, conservation is not a concept.
It is a responsibility—lived every day.
