For an additional challenge it is possible to also hike into the gorge from the waterfall itself, which may require a night at the falls lodge to recover before venturing back. The protected rain forest, enclosing the falls, is a home to various creatures you may have the opportunity of gleaning. A visit to neighbouring Luke's beach provides the tropical island experience you may long for. Experience the still soothing waters of a crystal clear lake at dawn. Enjoy the opportunity to simply bathe on the sun kissed shores after an engaging day or enjoy a cool cocktail overlooking the setting sun as it casts its reflection across the silver surface of the magical lake. Giving Back
Kalambo Falls lodge is committed to both the environmental sustainability of the lake's unique ecosystem, and most importantly the empowerment of the local community who call the lake their home. Working with the University of Basel, and the University of Graz, Kalambo Falls Lodge assists the Departments of Zoology, Biodiversity and Evolution in their efforts to maintain the numerous species present in the lake which are currently at risk due to unsustainable fishing practices. The lodge maintains and breeds various species now extinct in ponds, which are re-introduced into the lake to maintain its biodiversity. The lodge also works with local authorities to protect breeding areas from commercial fishing which threatens to destroy various species, and provides training and education to local fisherman on sustainable fishing practices. Our charity, The Ngombe Initiative, Ngombe, meaning the cow and giver of life, works to provide additional income sources to the local community who are heavily dependent on fishing alone. The Ngombe Iniative is geared at training in bee keeping, fish farming, and agricultural practices, as well as providing a marketplace for produce. The main focus of the Initiative however, is the support of local schools in the area, through supplies, the support of additional teacher's salaries, as well as ongoing construction. We have received various donations from foundations and individuals alike. Guests are welcome to visit or volunteer their time particulraly in the field of extra curriculars such as sport, art and music. Donations towards the iniative are welcome in all forms. Come to the lake and experience Akasuba Magic in style!
