Kenya is more than the Masai Mara

When you think of a safari in Kenya, the Masai Mara is often the first place that comes to mind. And for good reason, but Kenya has so much more to offer.

From Laikipia, to the Mara and beyond, Kenya is home to a wonderful variety of conservation areas, landscapes and safari experiences, each with its own character.
These photos are from a safari we planned for friends earlier this year in Laikipia, a very different experience from the Mara, with beautiful landscapes, incredible wildlife.

Everyone knows the Serengeti. But have you considered Ruaha?

Ruaha offers huge landscapes, with wildlife and a much more remote feeling. It is one of Tanzania's destinations we particularly love for travellers looking for something a very different.

If you have already seen the famous safari destinations , or simply want a quieter experience, Ruaha is well worth considering.

What does “local knowledge” actually mean?

It means knowing which camps we trust, which areas work best at different times of year, how long to stay, how to combine destinations and which experiences are genuinely worth making time for.

It also helps that our team really enjoys travelling and getting out into the bush!

We don't personally get to every single camp or destination we recommend, but we work with people we know and trust on the ground. Over the years, we've built relationships with camps, guides and operators who share our standards and who we are confident putting our clients in the hands of.

No two Zamag safaris need to look the same, because no two travellers are the same.
That's the difference between simply booking a trip and designing one with the right people, places and experiences for you.

If you want to see huge herds of elephants, Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is the place to go.

One of my favourite elephant sightings so far happened in Hwange in 2023 while I was staying at the Imvelo Camps.
I was sitting in a hide overlooking a waterhole when the elephants started arriving. First a few, then more and more, until there were at least 200 elephants coming down to drink.

Sitting quietly in the hide and watching that many elephants gather around the pan was pretty incredible ,and definitely one of those safari moments that stays with you. Imvelo Safari Lodges

The Lower Zambezi is probably one of the Zamag team's favourite places, partly because it is so easy for us to get to from Lusaka, but mostly because there is just something so special about being there. It is one of those places where the setting is every bit as memorable as the wildlife.

Imagine starting your day beside the Zambezi, heading out on safari as the sun rises, stopping for coffee in the bush after a great morning of game viewing, then returning to camp for brunch and some time to relax by the pool.
In the afternoon, perhaps it's time to head out fishing before returning to camp as the light starts to change and the evening settles over the river.

And that's what we love about the Lower Zambezi. It isn't just about game drives. You can canoe, boat, fish, walk and explore by vehicle, giving you lots of different ways to experience the bush.

There are some wonderful camps along the Lower Zambezi, but choosing the right one really matters. That's where our local knowledge comes in. We know the area, we know the camps, and we know which ones we would choose for different types of travellers.

You can take the farmer off the farm, but you can't take the farming out of the farmer!

What do farmers enjoy more than comparing notes with other farmers?

Our agriculture tours are about more than seeing how farming is done in Africa. They are about meeting the people behind the farms, seeing the crops and livestock, swapping ideas and, inevitably, talking a lot of farming.

For farming families or anyone with an agricultural background, this can be a wonderful addition to a safari and often becomes one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

Safari is still at the heart of what we do. Agriculture simply gives us another way to connect people, share knowledge and bring farmers together from different parts of the world to experience farming in Africa, specifically in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The Okavango Delta is not the same experience all year round.

Water levels, seasonal wildlife movements and the location of your camp can all change what you experience. That's why choosing a Botswana safari is about more than simply picking 'the Delta' on a map.

We look at the time of year you are travelling, what you want to see and the type of safari you enjoy before recommending where to stay.

Good safari planning is all about the details.
