Good afternoon.
Today is not merely the unveiling of a sponsor. It is the unveiling of a new philosophy for Kwekwe United Football Club. It is a declaration that this club will no longer think only about the next match, but about the next generation.
As President of this great club, I am privileged to lead an institution founded by His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa—a visionary leader who understands that sport is not just recreation, but a vehicle for national development, youth empowerment, and economic transformation.
Today, I want to speak about a difficult truth that football rarely addresses: the short career span of a player.
The average professional footballer retires by age thirty-five. For many, the contract that pays their salary today is gone tomorrow. Too many players leave the game with nothing but memories and injuries—no savings, no investments, no sustainable livelihood. That narrative ends now.
Under this new partnership, Kwekwe United is introducing a groundbreaking Player Financial Legacy Programme—a comprehensive wealth management and life-after-football strategy that will become a model for clubs across Zimbabwe and beyond.
Here is what this means in concrete terms:
First, every player will have access to mandatory financial literacy training. They will learn how to budget, save, invest, and avoid the pitfalls that have trapped so many athletes before them.
Second, we are establishing a club-managed Retirement Annuity Fund. For every dollar a player contributes, the club and our sponsor will match it—building a nest egg that grows throughout their career and secures their future long after retirement.
Third, we are creating individual investment portfolios for each player, managed by professional financial advisors. These portfolios will be diversified across asset classes—real estate, money markets, and small business ventures—so that when a player hangs up their boots, they have assets that generate income.
Fourth, we are launching a Business Incubation and Education Fund. Players who wish to start businesses or pursue further studies will receive seed capital and mentorship.
