I recently completed a 7-day fasting challenge I've set myself during the holy month of Ramadan, which ended last weekend. I undertook this challenge as a non-Muslim not only to experience the physical and mental aspects of fasting, but also to learn more and respect the spiritual and cultural significance of this practice.
I have to say that it was a humbling and enlightening experience. From waking up early to eat before sunrise (suhoor) to abstaining from food, drink, and other pleasures during the daylight hours, to breaking the fast (iftar) with dates and water followed by delicious meals with people closest to me, I felt a sense of discipline, empathy, and community that transcended my personal beliefs and habits.
I also learned a lot from my Muslim friends and colleagues who shared their stories, rituals, and values with me. They explained how Ramadan is not only about hunger and thirst, but also about self-reflection, compassion, gratitude, and generosity. They showed me how fasting can help one appreciate the blessings of life, strengthen one's willpower and empathy, and also connect one with God and humanity.
I am grateful for this opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and learn from a different perspective. I hope that my small gesture of solidarity can contribute to more mutual understanding and respect among people of different backgrounds and faiths.
Ramadan Mubarak to all my Muslim connections and Happy Easter to my Christian connections alike!
