On 16 October 2008, the Queen Elizabeth 2 made her 710th and final call to New York, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter in her maritime history.

Having first arrived in New York in 1969, the city had become a second home to this legendary ocean liner. Nearly four decades later, QE2 bid her final farewell to America as she departed on her 806th and final transatlantic crossing.

On 10 October 2008, two legendary Cunard Queens embarked on a remarkable journey across the Atlantic.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 departed Southampton on her final westbound transatlantic crossing, sailing alongside Queen Mary 2 towards New York.

For QE2, it was one of the defining moments of her farewell season, as she approached the end of nearly four decades of service. Cunard records that QE2 retired from service in 2008, while Queen Mary 2 continued the tradition of ocean-liner travel.

As QE2 approached the end of nearly four decades at sea, this extraordinary crossing celebrated her remarkable legacy and the continuation of a timeless maritime tradition.

Long before finding it’s home aboard the QE2, this historic portrait had already crossed oceans.

Painted by renowned British portrait artist Sir Oswald Birley, the portrait depicts Queen Elizabeth, later known as the Queen Mother, and originally graced the First Class Main Lounge aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth from 1948.

In 1994, the portrait began a new chapter aboard the QE2, where it remains today carrying a remarkable piece of Cunard heritage from one legendary Queen to another.

If this stairway could talk, imagine the stories it would tell.

Today, it’s one of the most photographed spots aboard the QE2 but in 1982, these very steps witnessed a very different chapter in the ship’s remarkable history.

During the ship’s 1982 troopship service, soldiers turned the stairway into a test of strength and endurance, carrying one another on their backs up eight decks sometimes even while blindfolded.

From extraordinary moments at sea to an iconic photo spot today, every step aboard the QE2 carries a story.
