January on the Wolfgangsee. Our nephew pointed his drone at the lake on a winter visit and came back with this. The flight starts from die Enge and heads east towards Strobl — 10.5 kilometres of glacial lake stretching away through the mountains. One of 76 lakes in the Salzkammergut. Most people never get past Hallstatt. 💙

Sunday morning dog walk — early, because the Ice Saints have finally packed up and left and summer arrived almost overnight. The Sulzbach cuts through a narrow gorge beneath a little bridge five minutes down the valley from Landhaus Fay, and after a wet day the sound of the water can be even more thunderous. There’s a path here that winds through the forest all the way down into Bad Ischl. We’ve lived here ten years and the beauty around here never stops taking our breath away. 🌿

About an hour’s walk from our front door — all uphill, around 400 metres of altitude gain, entirely worth it. This is the Hoisnrad Alm at 969m, a traditional mountain hut that’s been in the same family since 1930. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am, May through October. The food is good, the beer is cold, and the views from the terrace stretch across to the Wolfgangsee. One important note: cash only. Worth knowing before you set off. The views — and the locals — don’t disappoint. 🏔️

This happened in our village earlier this week — the Maibaumaufstellen in Perneck. Every year, the whole community turns out to raise a 31-metre decorated pole by hand, using nothing but wooden poles and coordination. That’s Mark in the white shirt, doing his bit. It takes the best part of two hours, considerable muscle, a lot of shouted instructions in Austrian dialect, and — this year — luckily, just a light breeze. We’ve been here ten years and it still stops us in our tracks. This is village life in the Salzkammergut. 🌲🇦🇹

Furniture freshly painted, the first lawn cut of the year, the forsythia in full bloom and the guest garden is open for the season. There’s something about sitting here with a glass of wine at the end of the day, watching the light fade over the mountains, that makes everything feel very far away. In the best possible sense. 🍷

This view is just a 15-minute easy walk from our front door. The trail is the Kaiser Jubiläumsweg — laid out in 1898 to mark Emperor Franz Joseph’s jubilee — and this viewpoint looks out over Bad Ischl and the valley beyond, with the Alps stretching away as far as you can see on a clear day. We walk it regularly and it never gets old: quiet, well-marked, and completely ours. Spring is genuinely the best time to do it. 🏔️

Spring is doing its thing in the Salzkammergut. The snow is still on the Zimnitz peaks, the meadows are turning green, and Bad Ischl is blissfully quiet before the summer season begins. Honestly? This might be our favourite time of year. ❤️🗻
