Sometimes the climb is just totally worth the effort! Took the bikes out yesterday for a trip to Chorinsky Klause (and a bit beyond) and came out of the forest to this view! On the way back a beer and a swim in the river were a welcoime refreshment. After 10 years, we are still finding new routes and new views.

We weren’t sure the iphone would capture it. It didn’t — not exactly. But physics had other ideas.
This evening Mark and I cycled up to the Jubiläums viewpoint above Bad Ischl to watch today’s solar eclipse. At the moment it reached its peak, the sun dropped behind the mountains. In the lens flare — that pink circle on the right — you can see the crescent shape of the eclipse perfectly. Completely accidental. Completely unrepeatable.
Some evenings up here are just something else. 🌑🌄

Morning dog walk, looking back down at Perneck. Our house is in there somewhere — the big white one - can you see it? We never get tired of this view, even after ten years. This is what you wake up to. 🏡🏔️

Just when you think it’s safe to go into the forest….
An afternoon bike ride on the trail past the Wildenstein ruins. Peaceful. Quiet. Nothing but birdsong and the sounds of the forest.
And then. 🦈
The Katrin Seilbahn doesn’t care about your serenity.
(Nobody was harmed. The cable car continued undefeated up the mountain. We finished the ride and had a beer.) 🚵‍♀️🍺

Most people who visit Hallstatt turn around at the lake. If you keep going beyond Obertraun towards Bad Aussee, you’ll find two of the most quietly magical spots in the Salzkammergut.

The Koppenwinkelsee is a small nature reserve lake — peaceful, still, and almost completely unknown to tourists. A few minutes further along the same path is the Bühlerbach Ursprung, a natural spring where a full river appears out of solid rock as if from nowhere. The air temperature drops noticeably around it — the water is straight out of the mountain and ice cold.

Our guests Anthony and found both last week on our recommendation and were kind enough to share their beautiful photos with us. We think they say everything. 🌿

January on the Wolfgangsee. Our nephew pointed his drone at the lake on a winter visit and came back with this. The flight starts from die Enge and heads east towards Strobl — 10.5 kilometres of glacial lake stretching away through the mountains. One of 76 lakes in the Salzkammergut. Most people never get past Hallstatt. 💙

Sunday morning dog walk — early, because the Ice Saints have finally packed up and left and summer arrived almost overnight. The Sulzbach cuts through a narrow gorge beneath a little bridge five minutes down the valley from Landhaus Fay, and after a wet day the sound of the water can be even more thunderous. There’s a path here that winds through the forest all the way down into Bad Ischl. We’ve lived here ten years and the beauty around here never stops taking our breath away. 🌿
