There’s something special about Salzburg during Rupertikirtag. ❤️

For a few days in September, the whole city seems to come alive. Dirndls and lederhosen fill the streets, music echoes through the Old Town, children head for the carousel and young and old come together to celebrate one of Salzburg’s most beloved traditions.

1. Take a stroll along the Salzach and enjoy one of the best views of Hohensalzburg Fortress.

2. Find Salzburg’s smallest house at Alter Markt. It is only 1.42 metres wide and was built into what was once a narrow alleyway.

3. Visit Cathedral Square and find the perfect perspective. From the right spot, it looks as though the angels on the cathedral façade are placing a crown on Mary’s head.

4. Explore St. Peter’s Cemetery and find the seven crosses of the Stumpfegger family. According to a dark Salzburg legend, Sebastian Stumpfegger is said to have tickled several of his wives to death. It is only a legend, but it remains one of the city’s most unusual stories.
