No trailer to hitch. No hour-long run to the fishing. The pangas sit in front of the lodge and the flats start where the beach ends, you're casting before most places have finished loading the truck.

Rods, leaders and permit flies waiting at the lodge if you'd rather travel light. Guides who've read this bay their whole lives.

Four rooms. One dining table. Fresh food, cold drinks, and a day that ends the way it should slowly.

Tucked into Mexico's "permit alley" within the Sian Ka'an Reserve, Mayazul is a small, elegant, beachfront lodge built around one goal: giving anglers as many shots as possible at the black-tailed devil of the flats. Christiaan Pretorius has fished the saltwater flats of Mexico extensively over the years, and he hosts this week alongside Mayazul's expert guides, chasing Permit, Tarpon, and Bonefish across the crystal-clear waters of Ascension Bay.
