🔥Toshi – a natural high-achiever, finalist for 2025 SA Apprentice of the Year, recently promoted to Junior Sous Chef at The Maylands Hotel. He plans to continue developing his leadership skills by completing a Cert IV in Kitchen Management. Hard work, talent and leadership in action.

🏆Mikayla – Officially crowned 2025 School-Based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year in SA and runner-up at the National Training Awards! What an achievement!! Recently finishing Year 12, she is already on her way to achieving her trade at The Feathers.

These wins are a powerful reminder of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity.

📣Annual MHG Anniversary Celebrations🥳

Last week, we celebrated 83 years of Matthews Hospitality Group! — a special night where managers from our ten hotels across South Australia come together to catch up, raise a glass, and recognise another incredible year of teamwork and dedication. 🥂

Each year, our venues nominate team members who embody our values — going above and beyond for their colleagues and our guests. These “Plus One” legends are the heartbeat of our venues, and we are so proud of every one of them. 💛

💲The MVBT finance award went to Brendan for The Feathers and Bri for the Mount Gambier Hotel 👏

🍔 WHAT A TEAM! 🍔
Last week, four of our hotels cooked as finalists in the AHA's Best Pub Burger Challenge!

A huge congratulations to our incredible chefs and support crew from the Maylands Hotel, Feathers Hotel, Salisbury Hotel, and South Eastern Hotel – all of whom made it into the Top 12 finalists in the 2025 AHA SA Best Pub Burger Challenge, proudly presented by Thomas Foods – Australia.

To have four of our hotels – and their burgers – featured on menus and recognised among SA’s best is a massive achievement. It’s a true testament to our kitchen teams' passion, creativity, and dedication.

The live cook-off brought the sizzle, the pressure, and the flavour as chefs from across the state competed in front of a live audience and expert judging panel.

👏 Big congrats to The Griffins Hotel on the win – and an even bigger thanks to our amazing Matthews Hospitality crew for making us proud every step of the way!

What a team. What a day. What a burger lineup! 🍔🔥

Your passion to learn, energy in the kitchen, and willingness to take on new challenges is second to none! 👏🙌

MEET MASON 🍔🔥

From scrubbing pans to smashing burgers with the best in the state – Mason’s journey is just getting started.

At only 16, he’s already a second-year apprentice chef studying at Adelaide’s Regency campus and holding his own among some of SA’s most seasoned chefs.

With Head Chef Emma and the crew backing him, Mason stepped into the 2025 Australian Hotels Association - SA Branch Pub Burger Challenge elimination round this past Monday, proudly plating up our signature smash burger.

His verdict? “On point.” 👊

Mason’s now the king of the larder section – crafting burgers, pizzas, pastas, and salads – and always the first to lend a hand at brekky. He’s fast becoming a core part of the Eyre kitchen crew… and we’re backing him all the way.

Whether we make the finals or not, this experience is already a win. Confidence. Growth. Stepping up among the greats (and a few friendly rivals). If not this one, there’s always another challenge around the corner.

Well done, Mason – you’ve done us proud. 🍔🙌

Nina has been a valued member of the team in Whyalla and Matthews Hospitality for over two decades! She has seen the Eyre's many iterations, renovations, and transformations of the Eyre! Thank you for everything Nina Burden ❤️ Enjoy the sleep-ins!!

Celebrating Nina – A True Legend of the Eyre Hotel

After more than 20 years, we say farewell (and a very big thank you) to Nina, our much-loved Head Cleaner, as she officially begins her well-earned retirement.

Nina has been the quiet hero of our venue – starting her mornings before sunrise, working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure everything was spotless, fresh, and welcoming for our team and guests. Her incredible work ethic, attention to detail, and pride in everything she touched set the standard for us all.

Beyond her hard work, it’s Nina’s light-hearted, easy-going nature and her ever-friendly face that made her such a joy to work with. Always ready with a smile and a kind word, she brought warmth and positivity to every shift and was truly part of the Eyre Hotel family. Her warmth, kindness, and loyalty will be missed the most. She’s been part of the heart and soul at the Eyre, and we are all deeply grateful for the decades of care and commitment she’s given.

Nina, thank you for everything. You leave behind big shoes to fill, a sparkling legacy, and a whole team who will miss you dearly.

Enjoy every moment of your next chapter - you’ve more than earned it 💛

We sat down with Neil, Sam’s dad and founder of the Sammy D Foundation, at the Feathers Hotel - a true legend whose strength and honesty are nothing short of inspiring.

This Sunday, 4th May, we’re serving schnitzels with purpose: $5 from every full-sized schnitzel sold (dine-in or takeaway) will be donated, as we aim to hit 500 schnitties across our group to support the life-changing work the Sammy D Foundation is doing.
