May is History Festival month across South Australia, and at the Largs Pier Hotel, history is not exactly hard to find.
Established in 1882, the hotel was built as more than a place to eat, drink and stay. Its three-storey bluestone structure, grand staircase, stuccoed arcades and eagles looking out from the archways made it one of the most recognisable landmarks along the Lefevre Peninsula.
For years, it was a haven by the shore in the truest sense. A place of rest and welcome for sailors, and a marker for ship captains who could set their course by the lights of the hotel, visible from far out at sea.
More than 140 years later, the coastline has changed, the suburb has grown, and the stories have kept building.
But the role of the Largs Pier has stayed remarkably familiar.
A landmark.
A meeting place.
A place people return to.
