Just digging up my first ever Jerusalem artichokes. Bought them in pots for $2 each from The Good Food Shed back in December. I've never grown them before so it was super interesting to watch. They grow tall, 5’-6’, with big yellow daisy like flowers that resemble elecampane. Best bit about them is you know exactly when they're ready to dig up cos the flowers die and the leaves drop off - then you're good to go!

Dug them up whilst also harvesting some capsicums, yellow stemmed Seakale beet (a kind of chard), tomatoes, spring onions and chillis to go with tonight's gluten free sangers, handmade onsite by Denmark's very own family butcher on Hollings Road. Can't get over it; we're well into May now and the garden is still this productive.

Tossed in garlic, fresh thyme (also from the garden), and olive oil; 45 mins at 175º and the Jerusalem's were an awesome accompaniment to my sausages and veg. Washed down with a Red from local Willoughby Park winery and sitting round a roaring wood fire, using my own wood chopping from Duck Pond Farm. the Great Southern!

A video, made for me just now by my iPhone (it’s not like I asked it to, it just does this sort of thing. anyway - I think they’re fun). Anyway, this features me walking across or local Nenamup Inlet when it’s dry

Election day at DPF and I was excited to experience the Aussie polling station Sausage Sizzle, a tradition that’s as true-blue ocker as an Eskie full of stubbies! I was already salivating after seeing my old Uni mate Jaynee's post about her sanger this morning.

There are no words for the disappointment I felt on discovering that Youngs Siding whilst charming in many respects is too much of a backwater to have a sausage sizzle - not enough people? You’d have to go to Albany for that mate, offered the helpful Liberal Party pamphleteer (a 50 minute drive away). I cast my vote and left empty of stomach; honestly, the state of our democracy. Anyway, here’s a couple of shots of our bustling downtown.

The coming storm; dusk at Duck Pond Farm, awaiting the promised rain as the sun goes down. Such big skies we have here and I wish my phone could photograph the night sky. Without light pollution the stars are so bright here. The Milky Way is really pronounced and when not overcast one can see the ground by starlight, and if the moon is full as well it's almost like daytime.

I was hoping for the forecast downpour so I can season the canvas on my new swag. It's been teasing us all day with dark skies and howling winds but apart from light rain and a spectacular rainbow there's been nowt. Yet!

Wow!! I mean I knew we had them in the area but I’ve just seen my first Quokka on Duck Pond Farm. SOoooo excited!!! Probably because I’ve never seen a quokka before, this is my first anywhere, but like that matters. Anyway, it was amazing.

Sadly this one was not as people-habituated as the ones on Rottnest so I didn’t manage to get a photo before it scampered away (I only saw it up close for about 5 seconds) so here is a stock photo from Google

I’m driving to Melbourne once we’ve swapped contracts so today bought a swag to sleep in whilst I drive across the Nullabor and thence the Great Ocean Road. Spent time whilst there in the National Parks ‘round Albany, going to blowholes, getting caught in rain and then this… a perfect semicircular rainbow, commencing in the cliffs and finishing in the sea. Gotta love the WA Great South

Another month in Paradise… I didn’t make this vid, btw, but they are my photos of DPF. It’s just something iPhones do; every day they make a different vid out of random photos and i happened to quite like this so thought I’d stick it up. Not sure about the backside photo of the Fairy Wren, and I think there’s too many herons, but that aside; nice one.

And that passion fruit Robyn is eating is our very first. We planted it only a month or so ago and the first fruit was delicious. We are very proud parents!

An almost typical Sunday morning at Duck Pond Farm. I say almost because another Sunfish got washed up round the corner at Lowlands beach yesterday, made the ABC news. Apparently it’s due to the same climate change that recently bleached half the entire coral reefs just off the Kimberley. It is what it is - we are smart enough, have the tech and the money to make things right so, let’s hope for sanity.
On a brighter note went to Lowlands, a lovely beach but the Sunfish was gone. Pity - i’d loved to have seen it. So I went on to the Good Food Shed, in Bornholm. You gotta get there early, i mean 8:45am!, to get the good stuff, even though it’s only supposed to be open from 9:00. However Lily, whose goat Sagie gives us our fresh unpasteurised goat’s milk for my corn flakes, still had a few pints going. That and some lamb chops from our always-only-grass-fed local (Denmark) butcher (they have their own fridge at the back) and I was done.
The Good Food Shed in Bornholm is a volunteer-run weekly event, selling organically gfrown local produce, in the only remaining siding building left from the old Albany - Denmark railway track that used to take timber out of the area and provisions in. Youngs Siding, our nearest village (we’re actually on Lake Saide, about 5km from Young’s) was named for the Young family’s siding on this same line. Nothing now remains except the name Station Road just outside the village store. Dating back to the 19th Century the Good Food Shed also have one of the last rail cars from that era, gracefully rusting away on the its own rails on the lawn outside.
Then back home to chill - God but we have a beautiful house. The moat is looking a little low but still full of the fish (tilapia?) that keep eating all the mozzie larvae so we are (surprisingly) mozzie-free here and, end of March, and the veg patch is still looking good (as you can see) and we have lots of particularly good capsicums almost ready to go.
Instead of chilling, decided instead to drop round to the neigbours to share a bottle of lunch (well, it is Sunday arvo!) but they were out so came home when i ran into this chunky guy on the road. I assume he’s a close relative of the blue Tongue but if anyone can ID him for me I’d be grateful.

Despite signs of the coming Autumn there are still days when there’s nothing for it but to head here. Just outside of Denmark this natural formation is sea break formed of large rocks which protects against incoming rough surf, smoothing it all out and, more importantly, not allowing anything big to enter in. So snorkelling to see small fish is great, hence the many families with small kids, but no shark net is needed. Safe as!
And it’s never really all that busy except at peak holiday season, and even then there’s still plenty of room. Green’s Pool is one of the best things about living here. Deep enough to get a proper swim, over my head for about half of it, and a goodish size, there’s also plenty of shallow swimming for the young’uns. I was gonna put up some photos but when my iPhone made this video instead, well… if it ain’t broke 😏

Popped into Willoughby Park, the winery of local outfit Boston Brewing Co, just out of Denmark. I know, why Boston? Come to that, why Denmark; so why not, i s’pose. It’s a nice bar overlooking the vineyard but it was a bit heavily infested with families so we grabbed a local wine from their bargain bin ($10 for a lovely dry rosé) and drove to Crusoe beach, in the Rudgyard nature reserve, Wilson Inlet. Our picnic basket, armed with all one needs, including wine glasses, sensibly never leaves our car.
Duck Pind Farm is just the other side of the inlet so we weren’t far from home.

Took a swim in the main soak while I watched the sun go down, aided of course with a rather cheeky little rosé from the Young’s Siding General Store. It’s a local wine, grown in Denmark. He Said, She Said - recommended.
