In this episode of 5 Star Conversations, our guest, Faulkner from -Belhotel International, tackles the uncomfortable truth about career mobility in the hospitality industry.

Achieving executive leadership often demands the significant sacrifice of geographic relocation and strategic corporate transitions. While rapid job-hopping damages professional credibility, remaining comfortably anchored at a single organization for decades can severely stifle growth. Embracing calculated mobility exposes hoteliers to diverse operational environments, ultimately building the robust adaptability required to reach the highest levels of management.

One of the recurring themes I've heard throughout San Antonio is that many hoteliers are still asking the same question: "Where do we start with AI?" During a conversation with fellow Advisor Somsen, his answer was surprisingly simple — before looking at new AI tools, take a hard look at your existing technology stack.

Vincent pointed out that many hotels already have AI capabilities sitting inside the systems they use today, but they're often overlooking the fundamentals needed to make those capabilities effective. Clean guest data, cloud-based platforms and well-maintained systems are all prerequisites for successful AI adoption. He also highlighted the importance of keeping a human in the loop. While AI can help automate decisions and improve productivity, most hoteliers are still more comfortable using it as an advisor rather than handing over complete control. His recommendation was to start small, focus on solving a real operational challenge, build trust in the technology and then expand from there.

A timely reminder that successful AI adoption isn't about doing everything at once. It's about getting the foundations right and taking practical, incremental steps forward.

Leaders who proactively embrace these narratives will enrich the guest journey and secure a major competitive edge by capturing this growing global demand early.

Experimentation is good, but operationalisation is where AI winners are made.

As another successful HITEC comes to an end, the most profound takeaway for me is this: The true winners in the AI race won't necessarily be the ones with the most experimental projects or the flashiest tech demos.

They will be the hotels and groups that prioritise operationalisation – integrating AI into their daily workflows to achieve tangible, measurable results.

It's about moving from proof-of-concept to proven impact.

Stop experimenting, start implementing.

And if you're trying to work out where to start, or how to turn AI initiatives into operational outcomes, I'm always happy to share what I'm seeing across the industry. Feel free to reach out.

In this episode of 5 Star Conversations, our guest, Faulkner from -Belhotel International, sheds light on the stark operational contrasts driven by cultural accountability.

Operating across diverse international markets exposes how deeply societal norms dictate guest behavior and compliance. In regions like China and Japan, high-trust amenities like 24-hour alcohol vending machines are sustained not by on-site security, but by strict cultural frameworks and severe public consequences for misbehavior. Understanding these profound sociopolitical dynamics is absolutely essential for global hoteliers looking to successfully adapt their risk management and operational strategies across different borders.

ROI scepticism, integration headaches, change management fears...

Halfway through HITEC, and the conversations are getting real. While the exhibit floor showcases incredible AI potential, my discussions with hotel leaders reveal their true concerns:

Resourcing: Do we have the right people and skills to implement and manage AI?

Integration: How will new AI tools fit seamlessly with our existing PMS and tech stack?

Change Management: How do we get our teams on board and overcome resistance to new ways of working?

ROI Scepticism: How do we prove the tangible return on investment for AI, especially with tight budgets?

These are the critical questions we need to answer to move AI from concept to concrete reality.

What's your biggest AI concern for your hotel?
