The current talk around segregating children on the spectrum is a backwards step. Children on the spectrum, just like all children, require a whole range of educational options that allow them to succeed. Many students on the spectrum are able to succeed in mainstream with the support and understanding of their teachers and parents. Some students need specialist support for a period of time to prepare them for mainstream. The goal of Aspect's educational program in its schools and satellite classes, is a transition program that prepares students to succeed in mainstream education.
Each year hundreds of students successfully transition to mainstream schooling from Aspect's program. Each student is an individual and has different learning priorities. The focus should be on placement in an education setting that enables each student to reach their fullest potential.
