A Tribute to Luke McCall- Stockman
Luke McCall was a towering figure in the annals of Australian stockman folklore, an untamed spirit of the Outback. Born in the early 20th century, Luke's life was steeped in the traditions of droving, an arduous craft that required grit and an infallible connection with the land and animals he worked with. His name became synonymous with northern Australia's vast, sprawling landscapes, where he spent much of his life moving cattle across the unforgiving terrain.
From a young age, Luke was drawn to the life of a stockman. He learned the skills of mustering, branding, and droving cattle from seasoned veterans of the Outback. His days began at the break of dawn and often stretched into the pitch-black nights, with only the stars for company. Over time, he developed an almost mystical rapport with his horses and dogs, who seemed to understand his every command, spoken or not.
Luke's reputation as a drover par excellence grew with each passing year. His understanding of the land allowed him to easily navigate the treacherous plains and arid deserts. He was known to lead his herds over vast distances, ensuring their safety and well-being despite the harsh conditions. His uncanny ability to locate waterholes and fertile grazing grounds became a legend among fellow drovers.
But Luke McCall was more than just a drover; he was a storyteller, a mentor, and a guardian of the Outback's traditions. Around the campfires, he would regale younger stockmen with tales of adventure and survival, passing on invaluable wisdom and ensuring the continuity of the droving legacy. His stories were peppered with humour and hardship, reflecting the dual nature of life in the bush.
