Spring has arrived. 🌱🥀🌼Today, 1 September, is National Wattle Day in Australia. To celebrate, we’re sharing photos of a nearby wattle in both daylight and under the night sky. The beautiful night‑scape images were captured by our guest, Mr Kenichiro Seki, during his stay in August.

Drought declared for Southern Downs — including Ballandean. ☀️The Qld Government officially drought‑declared the Southern Downs region on 28 July 2026, following more than 12 months of seriously below‑average rainfall.

Here in Ballandean, it certainly feels true. The comparison photos of Accommodation Creek — current (left) versus Nov 2023 (right) — were taken from the same spot, and the change is striking.

A few positives: our garden flowers such as camelias, daffodils and jonquils are still blooming 🌺and water supply is stable. And this dry weather is good for stargazers and astro-photographers. ✨

Let’s hope the next change brings the rain we all need.🤞

Fantastic night‑scape images from this month’s guests, Rosa and John. 🌌 Despite the unpredictable weather, Rosa still managed to produce these incredible shots. She kindly said, “Thank you for looking after us during our stay, we had a lovely time, our room was fabulous, and after all the wacky weather, I did manage to get some good photos. Hoping to return to Twinstar soon.”

The Fighting Dragons of Ara (NGC 6188) and the Prawn Nebula (IC4628).🦖🦐 Our guest, Mr Andrew Grey captured these beautiful images during his recent stay at Twinstar.

The top image shows the dramatic “Fighting Dragons” nebula with its bright dragon’s egg. And the bottom image reveals the softly textured red glow of the Prawn Nebula.

Andrew said, “The prawn and the dragon separately used a Vespera II 8 MB sensor, about 2300 frames.” Thank you for sharing these wonderful shots, Andrew.

The New Moon period 🌑is the perfect time for astro‑photographers. ⭐️📷 Winter is chilly here in Ballandean (around 0–16°C), ❄ but the crisp and clear night sky always draws passionate star‑lovers.

This week we’re delighted to welcome Mr & Mrs Suzuki from Japan (photo left) and Jane & Andrew from Brisbane (photo right). Their love for the night sky easily outshines the cold. 😊

Brinx Deli & Cafe in Stanthorpe is such a bright, cheerful spot — locals and visitors love it. Right in the heart of the main street near the Post Office, it’s the perfect place to pause and treat yourself. And yes… their coffee is that good.
