Yesterday we headed out on a little expedition to gather some kelp for our gardens. Kelp is rich in essential nutrients, including potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus, which are beneficial for plant growth. Kelp also contains trace minerals that help promote healthy plant development. By using it as a sort of mulch it provides wonderful, natural, slow release fertiliser.
We also checked the crab pots and found some good size Blue Swimmers. On the way home we were hailed by Mary from Amaroo cottage who invited us in for a cup of tea and a biscuit. Amaroo is one of the original Bar Point homes dating back to the 1920s. Mary has kept it in impeccable condition. Inside the rooms are decorated with beautiful period furniture and art. Just as impressive are her beautifully designed and manicured gardens full of rare and interesting plants. Mary is a guide at the Royal Botanical Gardens so a tour of her home is a very special treat. Although she is approaching a certain age, living on the river has kept her very fit. Her complexion and sprightliness would make you think she is much younger than her stated age. I was lucky enough to come home with some new plants and cuttings including a Grey Owl Juniper that I am quite excited about.
Mary has put the house on the market so if you are thinking of making a change to the river life, just an hour from Sydney this would be the one to buy. It's on the prized "Sunrise side" the eastern shore of Bar Point. It even has a lovely, sheltered private beach where children could safely play all Summer.
