💚 A moment I almost missed…

As I quietly approached the nest, I realised Mum wasn’t simply sitting with her little one… she was feeding her baby. 🥹

I was completely mesmerised, watching this beautiful little moment of nature unfold right in front of me.

Of course, by the time I thought to reach for the camera… she had finished! 😂

Some moments are simply meant to be watched rather than filmed.

But I’ll be keeping a very close eye on this nest…

❤️💙 WHO’S CALLING FROM THE BREEDING BOX? 🐦

A beautiful Crimson Rosella has been calling loudly from close to the breeding box near the shed…

And we can’t help wondering — could Mum be tucked safely inside? 👀

Crimson Rosellas are wonderfully colourful Australian parrots, easily recognised by their brilliant crimson-red plumage, blue cheeks & wings and flashes of blue & purple.

They nest in tree hollows, often choosing cavities in mature trees but our purpose built breeding boxes can provide an important alternative nesting site where natural hollows are limited.

During breeding season, the female generally spends considerable time inside the hollow or nest cavity while her mate stays nearby and helps with feeding & protection.

So when we hear that distinctive rosella call coming from right beside the box… perhaps there’s a little family story unfolding inside. ❤️

We’ll be watching closely … but quietly and letting nature take its course.

Another little Mansfield wildlife mystery waiting to be discovered. 🦋

🐦💚 A VERY SPECIAL TOPKNOT MOMENT 💚🐦

Remember our beautiful Topknot Mum who had been quietly disappearing into this tree?

Well… now we know exactly why. 🥰

There’s a baby in the nest! 🐣

Watching Mum carefully tending to her precious little one has been such an incredible Mansfield Cottage wildlife discovery.

Topknot Pigeons (Lopholaimus antarcticus) are rainforest specialists, usually found high in the canopy and feeding on rainforest fruits. They form monogamous pairs and build their rather delicate stick nests high in trees — usually between 2 and 12 metres above the ground. They typically lay just one egg, with both parents sharing the incubation and care of their precious chick. (The Australian Museum)

And here’s the truly amazing part… 🥹

Like other pigeons and doves, both Mum and Dad can produce “crop milk” — a highly nutritious secretion from the crop that is fed to their baby during those precious early days. It’s not true milk, but it gives the tiny chick the rich nutrition it needs to grow. (Australian Geographic)

From a hidden nest low in our trees to a tiny new life unfolding before us…
