Happy 55th birthday to our Nephrology Department! 🎂

The Medical Renal Unit was established in June 1967, until it became a full-scale Nephrology Department.

The RMH had some pretty big innovative operations in the renal discipline during this time. In 1956, the first ever kidney transplant in Australia was performed by Professor Maurice Ewing at the RMH, and the first successful kidney transplant in Australia was performed at the RMH on 10 August 1963.

These pioneering procedures were not without an incredible Physician in Charge of the Medical Renal Unit - Dr Priscilla Kincaid Smith. She's also been internationally renowned for being instrumental in developing nephrology as a specialty in Australia.

Priscilla's also the first woman to be appointed a Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, and was able to demonstrate the link between headache powders and kidney damage.

Not only was Priscilla a trailblazer for women in medicine, she lead an impressive career, receiving a Companion of the Order of Australian and being appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

💨 SNOW us your weather photos 🤣. It's been a wintery blast these past 24 hours and while overnight temperatures will stay low, showers will ease until early next week then a few more spring like days (unpredictable) before warmer temperatures by the end of next week. It's been snowing in Beechworth this morning. Suzanne sent us this from her front door...too fresh to step outside just yet 🌤

Exciting though it is to see our slow steps to a Covid normal The Graces is still not permitted to open until the final stage. There was much confusion about being open or being ‘a bubble’ because I live here and host guests. In consultation with the Vic Government Covid Business Support I have been advised that Hosted BnB as opposed to Air BnB are to remain closed. Cheers

We have all been waiting to see when we can get out and about...According to this latest information accommodation cannot operate until Step 3...which from what I have read won’t be until after mid October at the earliest. Then only with social distancing and caps on numbers per household...so while we know a little...we actually are still in a holding pattern.
I had thought I would be able to operate as an air BnB style..but even that won’t work until step 3...so stay in step my friends..and let’s beat the bug in time to enjoy our festive season.❤️

Just an update...Thank you my wonderful guests past and future. I have appreciated your faithful ongoing support and interest over this prolonged period.
The Graces hasn’t opened when others may have. This is because it doesn’t meet social distancing rules, dining service and Covid cleaning (antique furniture and soft furnishings are susceptible to the cleaning both in frequency and strength). Those who may have stayed here will know that this is also my home and therefore has further restrictions on numbers of people staying. I operate the business on my own with no staff and am also in the age group considered to be of risk.
The ongoing trend of the Virus means The Graces will continue to remain closed. I am moving toward reopening as an Air BnB. Guests will then book in a self sufficient model. There will be provision of a yummy basket breakfast of local goods and the delightful Brown Bros Prosecco and Florentines as before. Ted and I will be happy to leave you to enjoy a break in beautiful Beechworth. There will be no Online Travel Agents involved (Expedia etc).
It is all a plan at the moment and I will keep you posted as it becomes a reality.
Stay safe one and all -thank you once again. Cheers
