'In the spirit of reconciliation, Melaleuca Surfside Backpackers acknowledges the
Worimi Ngurras and all Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. Created using wood and glass to maximise harmony with
nature Melaleuca Surfside Backpackers is a purpose-built and owner operated; architecturally designed retreat set on 6 acres of natural bushland five minutes walk from the sparkling waters of One Mile Beach in spectacular Port Stephens. Nestled within Tomaree National Park, in what is known as a Koala corridor, we are a "Land for Wildlife" property and home to a large variety of native birds and animals, this is something we have always considered when building and have endeavoured to keep every tree on the property. We are an eco-friendly environment, for not only our human guests but all the others creatures that inhabit the grounds. We are licenced to rescue and rehabilitate native wildlife with Hunter Wildlife/Native Animal Trust Fund, and aim to promote education of the creatures we are privileged to share our land with, if you are lucky you may meet a possum or macropod or view wild Koala's or one of the many varieties of birds that can be seen on site. Not only do we provide accommodation for weary travellers, we hold an Eco Pass for Tours in Tomaree and Worimi National Parks and use our awesome 4WD vehicles to operate Sand Dune adventure tours on the magnificent Stockton Bight, or Worimi Conservation Lands. There is plenty to do in this area, we have 26 pristine beaches including Stockton Bight on Worimi Conservation lands, with the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, One Mile Beach with its learn-to-surf waves, and Samurai Beach, one of NSW "Free Beaches" - clothing is optional here. Port Stephens is the dolphin capital of Australia and from May to November, you can witness the spectacular migration of the humpback whales with either a whale watch cruise or try your luck land-based whale watching in Anna Bay. We are pretty excited to share that while we have all been “locked down” with Covid 19 changes, we have had the opportunity to rejuvenate the grounds and communal areas for your enjoyment, we really hope you like it. We are also committed to inclusivity, Melaleuca is a welcoming environment for all backgrounds, genders, nationalities, and members of the LGBTQI communities. We operate a zero-tolerance policy to racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, ageism and any form of discrimination or cruelty whatsoever.
