(1669)

Lady Elliot Island is a coral cay located at the southern tip of Australiaโ€™s World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef, 80kms north-east of Bundaberg (north of Fraser Island). Lady Elliot Island is regarded as one of the best snorkelling and diving destinations on the Great Barrier Reef. Situated within a highly protected โ€™Green Zoneโ€™, the Island is a sanctuary for over 1,200 species of marine life

and is renowned for an abundance of manta rays, turtles, amazing array of spectacular marine life and unspoilt coral reef. Lady Elliot Island is the perfect destination to explore the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, straight off the beach. Enjoy a glass bottom boat/guided snorkel tour, snorkel safari, a guided reef walk, snorkel with turtles, dive with manta rays, witness the magic of bird and turtle nesting and hatching season or watch the majestic humpback whales blow and breach (in season). We operate an unpretentious 44 room Eco Resort on Lady Elliot Island which strives to provide guests with a genuine eco-tourism experience ranging from Eco Cabins to 2BR Beachfront Units. In keeping with the natural, eco-friendly lifestyle there are no telephones, television or radios and all rooms are fan-cooled. The rooms are simple but comfortable and have everything you need for a nice and relaxing holiday. Our location on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef makes the Island easily accessible for visitors to South-East Queensland. The Island has its own airstrip and we offer scenic flight transfers from Bundaberg (30mins), Hervey Bay/Fraser Coast (40mins), Brisbane - Redcliffe (80mins) and the Gold Coast (100mins) for day visitors and overnight guests.

๐Ÿ’š We are proud to share some wonderful highlights from last week's Ecotourism Australia Global Sustainable Tourism Summit!

Our Island Custodian Amy Gash represented Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort on the "Turning Purpose into Profit" panel alongside Paul McGrath, CEO of YHA, facilitated by Daniel Gschwind. It was a fantastic opportunity to share our story and connect with like-minded leaders who believe that doing good and doing well are not mutually exclusive.

๐Ÿฅฐ We are also incredibly honoured that Ecotourism Australia presented Lifetime Achievement Recognition to our Managing Director Peter Gash and former Chair Dr Claire Ellis, recognising them as sustainability champions and for their tireless work promoting Australia as a destination for responsible and nature-based tourism. These are richly deserved acknowledgements of two people who have given so much to this industry. Congratulations to you both!

๐Ÿ And congratulations to Anna Macklin from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, the winner of our Lady Elliot Island Day Tour Prize. We cannot wait to welcome you to the southernmost coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef!

โœ… Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort has held Advanced Eco Certification since 2009, Climate Action Leader Certification since 2017, and were recognised as a Green Travel Leader in 2019 after a decade of certified operation.

Events like this remind us why this work matters and how far the sustainable tourism movement has come ๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŒŠ Around here, every day is World Oceans Day and our Island Custodian, Amy Gash, knows better than most just how magical life is beneath the surface here at Lady Elliot Island.

๐Ÿฌ It was right here in our shallows that her encounter with Bubbles the Bottlenose Dolphin inspired her very first book, "Ellie's Reef Adventures" ๐Ÿ“˜

During an early morning sunrise swim, Bubbles put on an unforgettable show, chasing trevally through the shallows in one of those rare, wild moments that remind us exactly why we do what we do ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿชธ

Amy counts it firmly in her top three snorkels at the resort (high praise from someone who's lost count of how many she's had ๐Ÿคฃ)

To celebrate World Oceans Day, Amy is donating $5 from every book sold throughout the month of June to Citizens of the Reef, a cause as close to our hearts as it is to hers.

๐ŸŒฟ Happy World Environment Day! This year's theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future." couldn't be closer to our hearts here at Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort.

Every day, we are surrounded by living proof of why protecting our planet matters.

To celebrate, we're shining our sustainability spotlight on one of our most meaningful partnerships, our long-standing collaboration with Greenfleet, an environmental not-for-profit dedicated to restoring legally protected native forests to protect our climate.

Here's how it works: for every booking, our guests are invited to voluntarily donate $2 to offset their flights to and from Lady Elliot Island ๐Ÿ’š

Our journey with Greenfleet began close to home, with tree planting at Barolin Nature Reserve behind Mon Repos, helping create a green screen of vegetation to shelter nesting turtles. That project has since wrapped up, and our impact has grown to a national scale, with revegetation efforts now spanning all of Australia.

The numbers speak for themselves:
๐ŸŒณ 8,743 tonnes of carbon offset since 2017
๐Ÿ’š $140,329 donated by our guests toward forest restoration

None of this is possible without you. Every stay, every donation, every choice to travel consciously adds up to something meaningful.

On this World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to authentic climate action, growing forests, restoring nature, and growing hope for future generations.

Did you know that until 2008, scientists believed there was only one species of manta ray?

๐Ÿฉต These magnificent creatures can stretch up to seven metres across, yet for years they remained one of the ocean's great mysteries.

In this fascinating episode, researcher Asia Armstrong from Leaf to Reef: Biodiversity of Lady Elliot Island shares how a single dive nearly two decades ago changed the course of her life, and how something as simple as a photograph of a manta ray's belly can unlock extraordinary secrets about their lives, movements and survival.

It's a beautiful reminder that the ocean still has so much to teach us, and that anyone with a camera and a love of the sea can contribute to protecting it.

๐ŸŽง Give it a listen โ€” we think you'll love it.

A bird lover's paradise awaits at Lady Elliot Island๐Ÿฆ

Our Guest Activities Team hosts one of Lady Elliot Island most beloved tours, the Bird Watching Tour, and it's not hard to see why it's a firm guest favourite.

Birds are an essential part of the island's ecosystem, helping to fertilise the soil and sustain the very vegetation that makes this coral cay so special.

๐Ÿ“ธ Earlier this month, Tracy Olive, a long-time revegetaion volunteer and guest joined the tour with Giorgia our Master Ref Guide and captured these stunning photos.

1. Eastern Reef Egret - white morph
2. Giorgia leading guests on foot around the island
3. Giorgia helping guests identify birds
4. Frigate Birds - known as pirates of the sky
5. A red-tailed tropicbird parent and chick

๐ŸŒฟ Have you joined one of our Bird Watching Tours before? Share some of your photos in the comments.
