Should WA use artificial intelligence to help prevent bushfires? 🔥 🌳 Curtin University’s Alex Jenkins thinks the technology should be rolled out here.

We once had fire spotters sitting on top of tall trees around Pemberton, including the Diamond Tree and the Gloucester Tree. The modern-day equivalent of that is setting up AI cameras on look-out towers or using drones to spot fires.

The Director of the WA Data Science Innovation Hub says the technology has been adopted in parts of Australia and overseas.

“I would absolutely love to see it here,”Mr Jenkins says.

“We can use cameras on these types of fire tower systems which are able to detect fires faster and they can be so sensitive that they can detect that very slight shimmer from the heated air that isn’t even visible to the naked eye and that is the very start of a fire.”
