It all started in 2012. The dream of a holiday house on the Timbarra River was going to be realised. It took 5 years of persistent slog. And we can say that we did it ourselves, with a bit of help from family and friends.

The 12 big poles harvested from Timbarra are a beautiful feature of the house. Recycled windows and doors add to the rustic look. The strawbale infill that we pushed and shoved into place and rendered by hand with several layers mud, clay and a mixture of sand, lime and rice hulls creates a voluptuous little house. The warm, creamy walls contrast beautifully with recycled roofing iron inside and red and grey colourbond outside. Poured earth floor tops, or bottoms, it all off.

Our Hideaway has settled into it's beautiful position next to the Timbarra River like it was always there. We love it and guests love it too.

I always wanted to add some bottles to an earth wall but when we built Timbarra Hideaway in Strawbale the walls were too thick for bottles, so I improvised. White drain pipe was put in this cobbed section of wall and the ends coveted with some beautiful glass. I then covered the edges so the glass is imbedded in the lime, brickies sand and rice hull render. The early morning sun shines through creating these gorgeous splashes of colour. So nice to walk into the room and see.

Today we tidied, rounded up spider webs, mowed lawns and the big moment was removing tree guards from 2 trees which are now big enough and strong enough to withstand cattle action. Oh and Mae, our dog, discovered Cocky Johns, the colloquial name for East Gippsland Water Dragons. She could not understand where they disappeared to when they jumped into the river, ha ha.
