The Bush University is now open!

An ancient gathering place at the Bunya Mountains is set to become a new place of learning for all people, with the opening of a ‘Bush University’ on the traditional lands.

In the past, thousands of Aboriginal people would converge on the Bunya Mountains every few years to conduct their traditional business and enjoy the bunya nut harvest. The Bunya Mountains was a highly significant place for these people, who are now celebrating their return to the iconic mountain with the opening of the Bush University – something they hope will play an important role in healing, re-connecting and sharing of their real history.

Taking 14 months to build, the Bush University is now open on the southern side of the Bunya Mountain, and features a 120-metre-long rock and concrete rainbow serpent as the centrepiece, as well as a dancing ground and rock pool. Access is via a steep track beginning at Fisher’s Lookout. The university aims to teach and share First Nations culture, and not just to Aboriginal people, but to everyone. Take the time to come and visit this culturally significant place next time you’re up at the Bunya Mountains.
