The Midnight Oil House, Burra, a South Australian Icon. Imagine stumbling across this magical scene in the South Australian countryside… a tiny historic stone cottage sitting among fields of brilliant yellow canola, with rolling green hills.

Located about 3 km from Burra on the Barrier Highway, at Cobb & Co Corner. The cottage is known as the Midnight Oil House and has become one of South Australia’s most photographed ruins.

The little farmhouse rose to fame after iconic Australian landscape photographer Ken Duncan photographed it, and the image was later used on the cover of Midnight Oil’s legendary 1987 album Diesel and Dust. 🎶🇦🇺

When the surrounding crops are flowering, the golden canola fields create an incredible contrast with the old stone cottage and rusty roof a quintessential South Australian country scene. 🌾💛

This house became famous as the cover photo for Midnight Oil's 1987 album 'Diesel and Dust' which was taken by Ken Duncan. While there certainly is a back story to the house proper, it is known Australia wide as the Midnight Oil house, and I would dare say it is one of, if not the most famous farmhouse of them all.
Travellers from all over stop for a photo, the house is also featured as part of the Regional Council of Goyder's logo. A short trip north of Burra along the Barrier Highway on your right.
This house is no less than iconic!

The Friends of the Burra Railway Station are back at it again this May, bringing a beautiful slice of history to life as part of History Month.

Step inside the historic station and enjoy a relaxed Sunday with a classic Devonshire Tea, the perfect excuse to slow down, catch up with friends, and soak in the charm of one of Burra’s most loved heritage spaces.

Or make a day of it and explore Burra’s heritage sites, take a wander through town, and finish with a cuppa and scones at the station.

Running every Sunday throughout May (3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st) from 11:00am – 2:00pm, it’s a lovely way to spend a few hours while supporting the incredible volunteers who help care for this special site.

All funds raised go towards the ongoing maintenance of the Burra Railway Station, helping preserve this piece of local history for future generations.

Grab a friend, enjoy a cuppa, and take a step back in time this May.

There’s no better way to start the year than on a good note, and we love seeing our town pop up on lists like this one!

Burra has been recognised as one of the most breath-taking towns in South Australia by World Atlas, and we think that’s pretty well deserved. From rich history to beautiful landscapes and character-filled streets, it’s lovely to see Burra getting the recognition it’s earned.
