Featured on the cover on one of Midnight Oil's most iconic albums, Diesel & Dust, the Midnight Oil House just outside Burra has become one of Australia’s most photographed ruins. Surrounded by canola for the first time in 9 years, now's the perfect time to get a photo!

PS. If you do wish to stop for a photo opportunity, please ensure you pull over a safe distance from the highway and keep behind the fence, this is on private property.

On this day 180 years ago, 29 September 1845, the Burra “Monster Mine” officially opened.
The first charge of gunpowder was set off in the Monster Lode, blasting out rich red oxide copper and, within hours, the first load of ore was trundled away by dray to Adelaide the next morning. The discoveries earlier that year by local shepherds kick-started South Australia’s first major mining boom and helped transform the young colony.

Today you can stand where that history happened: pick up a Burra Heritage Passport Key from the Burra & Goyder Visitor Information Centre and unlock the Monster Mine area, Morphett’s Engine House, the Powder Magazine, the dugouts and more. Come and explore 180 years of Burra’s copper story

Great time of year!
