This is a must visit for anyone going to Burra

The Friends of the Burra Railway Station are back at it again this May, bringing a beautiful slice of history to life as part of History Month.

Step inside the historic station and enjoy a relaxed Sunday with a classic Devonshire Tea, the perfect excuse to slow down, catch up with friends, and soak in the charm of one of Burra’s most loved heritage spaces.

Or make a day of it and explore Burra’s heritage sites, take a wander through town, and finish with a cuppa and scones at the station.

Running every Sunday throughout May (3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st) from 11:00am – 2:00pm, it’s a lovely way to spend a few hours while supporting the incredible volunteers who help care for this special site.

All funds raised go towards the ongoing maintenance of the Burra Railway Station, helping preserve this piece of local history for future generations.

Grab a friend, enjoy a cuppa, and take a step back in time this May.

Today in Burra's History - on 27th March 1924, the lights came on in Burra for the very first time.

After decades lit by candles, oil lamps and the glow of mine fires, electricity finally arrived in town thanks to the newly formed Burra Electric Supply Company. For the people living here, it must have felt like the future had arrived overnight. Imagine walking down those same bluestone streets as the lamps flickered on for the very first time.

Today, many of those same historic streets and buildings still stand, giving visitors a chance to step straight into the past. A stroll through town or a self-guided adventure with the Burra Heritage Passport lets you explore the places where those early residents lived and worked. Go to https://visitburra.com.au/ to find out more.

So next time you wander Burra’s historic streets, take a moment to imagine that first electric glow lighting up the night.
