We were lucky enough to chat with John Mitchell from The Book Room Collective, in the lead up to Byron Writers Festival.

For more than a decade, John has shaped The Book Room Collective into a true community hub and one of the Festival’s longest-standing supporters. In our conversation, he shares his and Karen's journey to owning the bookstore, the importance of community and connection… as well as his tips on making the most of this year's Festival.

“And so I spend time with each person and I ask our staff to do the same. To listen to their story, including what they’ve been enjoying or what they haven’t, with the idea that somehow I can introduce them to something that might be interesting and new and yet not too far departed from where they’ve been.”

“And of course, that’s part of the joy of the bookshop experience is that you get to know people. They get to know you. You tell them a little bit about what you felt and that might spark them. It’s a genuine conversation between humans.”

As we countdown to the always fabulous Byron Writers Festival (14-16 August 2026 for those getting their diaries out! 📅), our team have had their eyes lingering over this year's program. Spoiler: a treasure trove of talent and creativity is coming to Byron Bay!

This year, the theme for Byron Writers Festival is 🍃Sanctuary🍃. A timely spotlight on those nourished by the doing of writing, reading and thinking. The three-day program sees workshops, events, a kids program and – of course – an abundance of conversations from just as many writers.
