Built in 1939 at 183 Cairns Esplanade overlooking Trinity Inlet, Floriana was designed by architect Edwin Orchard as the city residence of Paul and Paulina Zammit and their family. Paul Zammit migrated from Malta in 1912 and went on to become one of North Queensland’s most successful sugarcane farmers near Bartle Frere, during a time when Cairns and Far North Queensland were rapidly growing through agriculture and trade.

The home itself tells the story of one migrant family’s success while honouring their heritage. Named after a portside village in Malta, Floriana blends elements of traditional Maltese design with the style of a modern Queensland home of its era.

Floriana quickly became a lively social hub. The entire ground floor was originally a ballroom, where the musically talented Zammit family hosted gatherings filled with music, dancing and community. During World War II, when Cairns became an important Allied base in the Pacific, Floriana even welcomed American and Australian military showbands, bringing the sounds of swing and jazz into the house during a remarkable period in history.

Today, the building still carries the elegance and character of that era and was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 2010. In the rooms you’ll find books like Queensland Sugar Cane King, sharing the stories of the people, industries and families that helped shape Far North Queensland.
