It's always a hard road, fighting for wildlife. It shouldn't be that way - but it is. People who have no vested interests and only want to stop cruelty and persecution of wildlife, are up against powerful interest groups and politicians who have conflicting interests - more development, more deals to be done, more ''progress'' to be made, with little room for wildlife in the picture.

Some days, you just have to focus on what you can save, can appreciate, can contribute to. Here is a beautiful little eastern grey joey who is being raised in care by humans who greatly value her life and her species. She is a Wildcare joey being raised under Wildcare's licence to rescue, rehabilitate and raise wildlife. ❤🦘

Nearly 1,000 wallabies, kangaroos and their joeys were killed across Mulligans Flat “Sanctuary” and the adjoining Goorooyaroo Nature Reserve.

344 wallabies were killed, along with 156 joeys killed by blunt force trauma. Of these, 58 wallabies and 33 joeys were killed at Goorooyaroo Nature Reserve, with the remainder killed at Mulligans Flat. 367 kangaroos were also killed, along with 115 joeys killed by blunt force trauma.

That is 982 lives taken.

Kangaroos and wallabies have adapted their breeding in response to environmental conditions and available resources over millions of years. Yet at Mulligans Flat, they live within a human-created fenced landscape where their natural movement and dispersal are restricted - and are then labelled “overabundant” to justify killing them.

Wallabies and kangaroos are not an excess simply because humans have drawn a fence around their habitat and decided how many are permitted to live within it.

Even more disturbingly, fertility control is already being used at Mulligans Flat — yet killing continues.

A sanctuary should protect all animals who call it home, not selectively decide which species are valued and which are controlled and killed.

We know from our history that wildlife killers who have vested interests in killing will keep killing as long as governments allow it…even until a species is on the verge of extinction. 💔💔💔

The ACT Government's recent cull resulted in the deaths of 5,352 native animals which included:

• 3,562 kangaroos
• 1,290 kangaroo joeys
• 344 wallabies
• 156 wallaby joeys

These aren't just numbers. They are thousands of sentient animals, including mothers and their young, whose lives were cut short.

Australia can do better. Instead of repeating the same cycle of annual killing, we should be investing in humane, evidence-based, non-lethal approaches that support tolerance and coexistence with our wildlife.

This year’s ACT Government kangaroo killing program is over.

The shooting has stopped. But for thousands of kangaroos and their joeys, there is no recovery.

Behind the number was 3,562 + 1290 joeys. At Mulligans Flat “Sanctuary” 344 wallabies were killed, and 156 joeys. A mother. A joey. A family. They were someone who wanted nothing more than to live.

For eight weeks, advocates returned to Canberra’s nature reserves night after night, documenting what was happening behind closed gates. Despite repeated confrontations with authorities and ongoing scrutiny, they kept coming back.

Together, we captured never-before-seen footage, reached millions of people through social media, rallied outside the Legislative Assembly, and inspired thousands of emails to MLAs demanding change.

We didn’t stop the killing this year. But we made sure it wasn’t hidden.

To every person who stood with us, wrote an email, attended a rally, monitored a reserve, shared a post, or refused to look away, thank you.

The shooting may be over for this year. Our fight isn’t.

For the 3,562 kangaroos, 1290 joeys, 344 wallabies and 156 joeys who never made it home, and for the generations still to come, we will not stop.

Still no news from the ACT Environment Directorate about how many kangaroos, wallabies and their joeys were killed in the 2026 annual slaughter. We were advised it would be mid -August so it should be any day now.
No matter what the result, it is still sickening to know that so many defenceless sentient native animals were sacrificed .... for what?....They claim it's to save the grasslands, but in 18 years of killing kangaroos, there hasn't been any empirical evidence to demonstrate that kangaroos cause destruction of the grasslands to the extent that the survival of several endangered insects and reptiles is impacted.
So...what is causing the degradation of habitat for the perunga grasshoppers, golden sun moths, legless lizards and earless dragons?
We all need to look in the mirror for the answer. We humans have form. Kangaroos have never caused the demise of any animal. 💔🦘🦘

The ACT Government's annual massacre of kangaroos in Canberra's nature reserves is theoretically over. But they haven't announced it. They have refused to tell us how many kangaroos, wallabies and joeys have been killed. This killing is FUNDED BY CANBERRA CITIZENS. 💔🦘🦘

The cull has now ended.

You’d be forgiven for not knowing that, though — because the ACT Government hasn’t bothered to announce it.

Usually, in the last week of July, the public is told that the annual kangaroo cull has ended and how many kangaroos and joeys were killed.

We are well into August.

No announcement that the cull has ended.
No kill numbers.
No media release.
No information provided to advocacy groups.

Nothing.

And would you look at that — the ACT Government, usually so keen to defend this program entrenched in violence, has suddenly gone very quiet.

How convenient.

This is a taxpayer-funded killing program carried out on public nature reserves. The public has every right to know what was done and how many kangaroos and their joeys were killed.

So, ACT Government:

How many kangaroos did you kill?

And why the silence?

Advocates for Canberra's kangaroos report that the ACT Government's annual killing of kangaroos and their joeys in 2026 has been one of the toughest yet.
For so long this horrible atrocity in Canberra was barely known about, but thanks to everyone who has shared our posts and followed us, those committed to continuing this unnecessary and cruel massacre cannot hide and the government cannot pretend it doesn't happen - and it is largely thanks to social media.

This image is of 7 little joeys released onto privately owned land NE of Canberra. They were rescued as tiny joeys when mum was killed (most often by car strikes), hand raised by humans and raised for a life of freedom and safety.
This work was carried out under licence with Wildcare which rescues and rehabilitates wildlife in a 22,000 sq kilometre area around the ACT. It takes a village.
A little bit of good news after 6 weeks of horror in Canberra's nature reserves. 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘❤
