Australians for Animals received the following email today from the Conservation Regulator in response to the latest email sent by the charity seeking confirmation that charges have been laid.

This is the response.

Dear Sue,

Thank you for your email to the Conservation Regulator. As the matter is still currently under investigation, the Conservation Regulator is unable to disclose any information relating to the circumstances, including any charges. The public will be informed in due course once the investigation has concluded and any outcomes are finalised.

The Conservation Regulator is considering all appropriate legal avenues.

Kind regards,

Conservation Regulator team

We now have one of the MOST OUTRAGEOUS ACTS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY EFFECTIVELY IGNORED BY THE VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT.

The koala was tied with a rope around its neck, tied to the back of a ute and dragged down the main street of Koroit in full view of women, children, local business and dumped in a nearby park.

Suffering HORRIFIC injuries, the koala was taken to Mosswood Sanctuary where a volunteer vet euthanised the poor suffering terribly injured koala. This happened on MARCH 26.

Now almost two months later, no charges have been laid in spite of the fact the alleged perpetrator was arrested by the police and subsequently released as the Conservation Regulator TOOK OVER. The RSPCA Victoria recommended concerned people call the CR.

In the past two months, we know that statements have been taken, that the evidence of aggravated cruelty is clear, there are witnesses and NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE.

Australians for Animals (AFA) has written to every board member of the RSPCA Victoria. No responses. The charity has emailed the CR a number of times receiving the same response.

AFA is in the process of seeking a lawyer to prosecute this case but.. the options are legally difficult. Meantime, the alleged offender is free in his community. If a human had been treated this way, the charge would be murder.

In Jacinata Allan’s Victoria, the murder of a koala is treated as something to be ignored.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO ? WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO ?

Social media is great for getting the word out but getting people to actually do something, besides signing a petition is very challenging.

Koala Crisis is in the process of emailing each MP in the Victorian Parliament Assembly and Council requesting immediate action.

It’s VITALLY IMPORTANT FOR VICTORIANS WHO ARE DISGUSTED OVER THIS APPALLING CRUELTY TAKE ACTION.

Here is the link to ALL MPs in the Assembly.

Here is the link to the Council.

Please either find your local member and send an email asking what they are doing about this scandalous situation OR if you can, email every single MP in both houses.

Unless there’s significant protest coming from Victorians, NOTHING WILL CHANGE.

The Victorian Labor government will have set another precedent of shocking cruelty to wildlife safe in the knowledge that DELAY MEANS NO ACTION and a public that forgets.

No, don’t leave it to AFA and Koala Crisis. This is a call out to Victorians. ACT!

STANDING HEARING –VICTORIAN SUPREME COURT - HELICOPTER SHOOTING OF OVER 1000 KOALAS AT BUDJ BIM NATIONAL PARK

It was a difficult two days of hearings in an ancient court house which is more like a maze with no ready access to toilets, no cafeteria and terrible acoustics.

The challenge by DEECA to deny Australians for Animals Inc standing was held in court room 13, with very little accommodation for the public. But the charity had a good mob of supporters who faithfully sat through the never ending DEECA counsel submissions to the Judge as to reasons why AFA should be denied standing.

To summarize, DEECA lawyers attempted to paint a picture demonstrating that the charity had no special interest in koalas ( other than an emotional one) and that there was no interest by AFA in any Victorian environmental issues relating to koalas.

Two witnesses from DEECA when questioned by AFA’s lawyers acknowledged the decision to authorize the shooting was made prior to the stake-holders’ meetings and that the five groups involved, Wildlife Victoria, IFAW, Humane Society International, RSPCA and Animals Australia were asked to keep the decision confidential. Which they did.

Sue Arnold, AFA’s public officer was in the witness box for well over an hour and a quarter whilst DEECA counsel tried to paint a picture of no current work by the charity on koalas and no involvement in any Victorian koala issues.

Given that AFA has been deeply engaged in the plantation issues, has attempted on several occasions to launch legal challenges against the Victorian government – with no success as a result of Environmental Justice and EDO not having capacity, plus the massive scientific submission to the US government which resulted in the koala being listed under the US Endangered Species Act, multiple campaigns for koalas in NSW, Queensland, SA, and Victoria, the charity’s history speaks for itself.

We will now wait for the judge’s decision. It may take weeks or several months. It is extraordinary that this case has dragged on for more than a year, apparently highly unusual according to Victorian lawyers).

Koala Crisis can make no prediction about the outcome. But it is clear that the government is pulling out all stops in an effort to ensure the massacre of these koalas never goes to trial.

However, AFA is determined to ensure justice for these poor koalas and to ensure that the decision to use this horrific method of killing is never again contemplated.

Victoria has a terrible history of severe and intense bushfires which will only get worse under climate change. If the helicopter shooting is found to be lawful, the future suffering of koalas and other wildlife could include this horrific method of “euthanasia”,

Once again, grateful thanks to ALL who have supported AFA in this critically important battle. We will win because we MUST win. Victorian government’s treatment of koalas and wildlife is a national scandal.

Helicopter shooting of any animal should be banned.

AFA is a grass roots organization. It always has been. This legal challenge can only be described as a David and Goliath battle.

Given the times we’re living in, the charity hopes that our principled stand inspires others to walk the talk. Our wildlife and our animals are sentient beings with the same needs as human beings.

Why has the man not been charged with Animal Cruelty???
Why do ppl who abuse dogs get charged a day later?
Yet our Australian Native Icon our koala 🐨 gets brutally dragged by a rope around its neck behind a car through Koroit and NOTHING has been done!!
You have the man do your job!!

Conservation Regulator Victoria why not?
What is being done to throw the book at this pathetic person?
When will he be charged?
Or is it OK to inflict animal cruelty?
Please answer these questions the country is waiting for!
Maybe setting a precedent might show the public you are doing your job not shielding the culprits

Wildlife carers say a koala had to be euthanised after it was injured when it was allegedly dragged behind a car in Victoria's south west.

KOALA WARS – WAGED BY OUR GOVERNMENTS

It doesn’t matter which koala state holds the record for koala habitat destruction, the result is the same. Dead koalas.

Ongoing decline of the species.

Koala Crisis is aware of considerable efforts by the forestry industry and those who support growth at any cost are ramping up the propaganda. This is classic stuff. Create chaos, division, doubt. Who to believe ? People these days are not well informed because mainstream media has little interest in the catastrophic decline of koalas, or the cruelty and horrific suffering dished out by governments to our wildlife.

In Queensland, the Queensland Conservation Council reports that by 2030, the state could lose up to 78% of koala habitat caused by habitat destruction from land clearing, urban expansion and climate change impacts pushing koalas to the brink.

Has this fact created grave concern in the Queensland Coalition government ? Not on your life. Premier Crisafulli just approved the Glencore coal mine which will destroy 600 hectares of nationally significant koala habitat.

Murray Watts, federal environment minister has to approve the project. This is not going to be a problem as the Albanese government continues to approve new coal mines and expansions of existing mines. ( Over 35 so far).

The Glencore mine will emit massive pollution and climate chaos. There’s no climate refuges for koalas in any state. The Greens gave in to Albanese over the EPBC Act amendments giving the federal government the okay to deny any climate trigger which would make assessing climate impacts of any project mandatory.

Let’s not forget the massive wind farm projects in Queensland that have destroyed significant koala habitat. Renewable energy in the form of wind farms equals dead koalas, dead wildlife, pristine bushland destroyed.

In NSW, the much-touted Great Koala National Park has still not been legally designated. It’s all dependent on a carbon credit scheme. NSW Labor under their anti environment premier Chris Mins, won’t create the park formally unless the forests can be exploited for carbon credits. As the Australia Institute says, “ it’s a decision with disastrous consequences for the koalas and the climate.”

Put simply, the NSW government wants to exploit the forests to make money from the trees that are koala habitat.

In other words, the creation of the park isn’t about koala conservation or protection. It’s about making money.

This is the formal language. he finalization of the park and the cessation of logging are tied to the federal government's approval of a carbon project under the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU) scheme, designed to generate revenue for the park through avoided forest harvesting.

Meeantime, logging or “ thinning” native forests in the proposed park with significant koala habitats continues. Recently the NSW government changed the boundaries.

Then we have Victoria. Words fail. No information is available on how many koalas died in the January/February fires. All we know is that thousands of animals have been impacted.

No information has emerged from the Labor government about food drops, water stations, surveys of burnt areas, Kangaroos continued to be harvested ( don’t you love that word – sounds so much better than KILLED – SLAUGHTERED) .. The numbers of kangaroos impacted by the fires was nothing short of horrific but the government wasn’t going to stop anyone making money out of a dreadfully affected kangaroo population.

This is the government that wouldn’t allow trained rescuers to access areas where fires had been extinguished to humanely euthanise or treat wildlife.

If community disgust could be gathered into a substantial voting bloc, who would you vote for ? Australian political parties are best described as barbarians when it comes to the rejection of wildlife suffering and loss.

But there’s a state election in Victoria in November. A time to deeply consider what kind of government will run the state.

Bottom line. As our wildlife disappears, so does our democracy. Governments can’t claim they have voter support for their policies of extinction. We all need to become politically active.
