Our Story
Thousand Lakes Lodge is the brainchild of former racing driver, Marcos Ambrose, who converted an abandoned Antarctic expedition training base camp into a luxury wilderness lodge, situated within a world heritage area in Tasmania's Central Highlands. In 2018 the lodge won the 3rd place among Lonely Planet's "top ten best new places to stay in the world."
The remoteness challenges the lodge to be creative with its food and drinks services, and the accommodation setup is imaginative due to its unconventional origin, and both aspects have met with most of our guests’ approval; the 9-room lodge has consistently received tremendous reviews on TripAdvisor since opening in 2016.
'Wilderness' being the main draw at our location, most guests venture out on foot or on eBikes for day activities, with a picnic lunch. They chance to see wombats, quoll, Tasmanian devils, wallabies and possums, usually on their way to one of the heritage fishing huts by one of the nearby lakes.
