A message from Railway Hotel Cessnock 🍽️
We've had a lot of questions and comments since our recent post about the new dining setup, so we wanted to address them properly rather than one by one in the comments.
🍺 Yes, we still sell beer. Bottles and cans. We're not doing tap beer, and here's the honest reason: without a pokies subsidy, the real cost of a schooner on tap here would be $14-15 once you account for tax, cleaning, and running the lines. That's not a fair price to charge you, so we'd rather not offer it than offer it badly. Instead, we're expanding the range: more beer, more imported beer especially from Asia, and we're introducing sake too. So if anything, there'll be more to choose from, just not on tap.
🏠 Why the change. We've run the restaurant at Railway Hotel Cessnock since Covid, and when everywhere else was shutting down, we stayed open, kept serving customers and kept locals employed. We've also run Oishii Japanese and Thai Restaurant at Roches Estate for over 25 years, so this isn't a new outfit chasing a trend, we've been part of this community a long time. The bar itself was run by a separate operator we brought in over two years ago, and for personal reasons they've stepped back. That's why we've taken full control of the bar again, and it's also why the team behind the bar looks different right now, we've brought our regular restaurant staff across to cover it rather than keeping it separate. It'll settle in as everyone gets used to the new setup.
🍷 What we're becoming. We're building our wine list around Hunter Valley family-owned wineries only. Cessnock isn't just a mining town, it's wine country that people travel from all over the world to visit, and we want the pub to reflect that. If you're a local small wine boutique and would like to introduce your wine into our list, we'd love to hear from you, call us on 49 901 070 or email [email protected]. We're also backing the community directly: Rotary, the Mayoral Scholarship, fundraising for family violence victims, and more to come.
🥩 On food. No chicken schnitzel, that's true. But if you want a good steak, our Beef Teppanyaki is under $40, try finding a decent size steak for that anywhere else right now.
🕯️ On atmosphere. No TV, no pokies, no Keno. Just a relaxed spot to sit down, talk to the person across from you, and actually catch up. We'll also be bringing in more artwork over time, so the space keeps evolving and feels warmer each time you visit. We also run catering and private functions, so if you've got an event coming up, get in touch and we'll take care of it.
We're not going to change everything overnight with a big budget. It'll be small, honest improvements every day, that's how we do things. I've been in this valley for 25 years, and I wouldn't have stayed this long if I didn't love this city. This pub matters to me the same way.
I'll be straight with you: this isn't going back to how it was. We're changing it for the better, with more focus on community. If you're after tap beer, schnitzel, or pokies, there are plenty of pubs in town that still offer that, just not us anymore. But if you want good Japanese and Thai food, a proper local wine list, a growing range of beer and sake, and a place you can actually hear yourself think, we'd love to have you.
