Happy New Year to you all! I'm told 2024 will be a good one for The Towers so all fingers are crossed!

We had a super Christmas here and some lovely, lovely guests, old and new, either passing through on their Christmas hols or visiting family in town. The storms gave us a few problems, mainly with the mayhem of debris all over, but at least everything is now so wonderfully GREEN (unfortunately including the weeds!). New blades have been bought for all the mowers so it's just a matter of finding time each day before it's too hot to get all the outside work sorted and keep the grass under control. This heat is enough to make anyone mad!

Our fish are doing well - too well in fact - and we desperately need more space for them, so if anyone has any old water tanks (or other receptacles) that are no longer useful to them we would be very happy to take them off your hands.

And we know you must be sick of rainbows by now but this one yesterday was grand...

Have a great year everyone!

The Saga of The Fish - Chapter 8

Feeding time is fun - you can see that they all come up to the surface for a while. Watching them is actually quite mesmerising, and dare I admit that we have started naming a few of them. We have Gobbler (which actually applies to all five of The Big Ones as they are a challenge to tell apart when all you usually see is their mouth), Spot and Coldplay (yes, he’s Yellow!). Roughly 297 names to go - perhaps we should have a naming competition?

The next chapters might be a bit more spaced out while we preserve the status quo and do some planning as to the way forward, as they are growing rather quickly! Thanks for tuning in thus far! 🐠🐠🐠

The Saga of The Fish – Chapter 7

So, we had happy fish for now, but with the attention they needed I really wanted to have them nearer to the main building to save time and enable us to check more regularly on them, the pumps and the filters. When they go downhill is seems to happen very quickly. Would be nice to have them close to be part of the Kernow family too.

Another tank was found on the property, was duly cleaned up and installed in our Secret Garden where hopefully, if they survived yet another move, they could become a feature for our guests to visit, and be looked after better. I had huge reservations about moving them again, but based on their new predilection for town water the biggest barrier had been overcome. During their stay at their temporary location near The Pond we had gradually introduced them to more and more of it, and they seemed to have fully adjusted to it, thank goodness.

Then it was just a ‘simple’ task of gradually moving a few each day. Easier said than done! You’d have thought that in such a captive area it would be easy but these fish are fast – and canny! It took blooming ages (and believe me that’s not the word I used at the time!).

Their new home of the tank and the old cattle trough were thus all town water, regularly flushed, and with more pumps, oxygenator plants and now a filter! It was all becoming five-star accommodation for our new fish – but what else would you expect at Kernow!

New routines were established, and we made covers out of netting to offer protection from the sun and from all the leaves that were falling – and probably from the Kernow Kats who were starting to show an interest. And not only in the fish. We discovered that Scampi and Solo like fish food – but then then Solo will eat pretty much anything!

Tune in soon for a picture of feeding time!

The Saga of The Fish – Chapter 6

I’ve never a really been a fish person (they don’t seem to give much back), but this was a new experience and something different to learn. Sadly the learning curve was steep – too steep for us to keep up with the needs and wants of this number of fish, and we lost some of The Big Ones. I was gutted 😕. Pumps were bought, oxygenator plants were installed, and routines were put in place to try and keep the remaining fish with us. We gathered up all the information we could from various sites online and from people who were in the know. The Tidlers were all fine and thriving, except the ones that seemed to be guppies rather than goldfish. They seemed to be less hardy and we lost a couple of those too. They were the same type as the first two that we had rescued (and subsequently lost).

Now I said that fish don’t seem to give much back, but seriously, they used to see me coming down the hill from afar, rise up to the surface and be ready and waiting for their feed. As I dropped their flakes onto the surface, the water would turn into a torrent of churning, piranha-like activity for about 30 seconds and then things would calm down and feeding would become a more polite, nibbling session. The Big Ones would graze later once The Tidlers had had their lot, and they would pop their heads up around the plants and ‘gobble’ – a most amusing sound!

As time passed and the routine became more established, we came to understand their needs and wants better and were able to keep their environment more stable and more palatable for them. Thus the remaining fish survived, but sadly there were only five Big Ones. BUT, we had about 300 Tidlers! OMG – if they all are likely to grow to 25 to 30cm we have some planning to do!

Now that status quo was being maintained, what next? Tune in again soon!

By the way, I was promised Likes if I told good stories. Where are my Likes peeps???? I'm working hard here!

Hey, we won!

Thank you so very, very much to everyone who has helped us achieve this award - those who took the plunge and stayed with us, and those who then chose to vote for us. To the organisers Townsville Enterprise , who are always there to support us behind the scenes, and to Vetta Creative for their sponsorship of the award.

Thanks also go to all our helpers and suppliers, and for the support from other local businesses who have all contributed to make Kernow a great experience for those that come and stay. Any business will know how challenging it can be to keep things running smoothly, so we appreciate all the assistance we have received to bring it all together.

Looking forward to seeing you all again soon, and to welcoming any future guests. We love meeting you and hope you'll enjoy the Kernow experience! Thanks again.

The Saga of The Fish – Chapter 5

I don’t know about you, but I thought goldfish were small – the ones you see often all lonesome in your typical round goldfish bowl, hoping that they really do only have a nine-second memory. Not so. Like everything that grows up on Kernow, whether it be cattle, cats etc, these were huge – probably about 20 to 25cm long! Panic-stations!

Where were we going to put them, and quickly?? We didn’t think they would last long in the stagnant, foul-smelling sump water for long, so our quickest solution was to use an old inflatable whirlpool bath, and we managed to borrow another large, round tank. So, both were set up near The Pond, filled with bore water, and gradually our new fish family were transferred into them. An instant family - again – which seems to be the go at Kernow, going by all the cats who have walked in on us! They seemed happy enough, so it was a case of getting to know how much to feed them, and generally how to tend for so many new mouths and fins.

Tune in soon for the next chapter, and to hear about The Tidlers...

The Saga of The Fish – Chapter 4

Didn’t want to leave things on such a sad note for too long, and for fear of being labelled a fish-killer when we really were trying to save them, so here’s the next chapter to cheer you up!

But lo, there were more metallic spots seen – and gold ones this time. The more we peered, the more we saw. This time we prepared a semi-murky trough of water using some of the less-goopy water from the sump, topped up with bore water, and started ‘fishing around’ in the true sense of the word, digging for gold. Well, soon enough we had a mass of small goldfish which were gradually transferred to the now more palatable trough. Trouble was, there were more, and more, and more, and then we found The Big Ones!

Tune in soon for the next chapter…
