Update: March Flood Event – Chinchilla
We sincerely thank everyone in the Chinchilla community for their resilience and the collective community spirit during the recent flooding that affected our town.
While The Laurels was spared from floodwaters —thanks to its over-century-old foundation on a high point of the Warrego Highway—we were able to offer safe shelter to travellers who found themselves stranded. We welcomed a range of guests, from truck drivers and people heading to medical appointments to others just trying to get home, ensuring they all enjoyed gathering around the tables at the Homestead enjoying a good old-fashioned stew and Aussie banter.
Despite the unpredictability caused by travel disruptions, those who stayed with us formed new bonds, exchanged stories, and enjoyed many moments of tears and laughter together.
We want to recognise the generous spirit of those on the western side of Charley’s Creek bridge—residents and businesses alike—who walked among waiting trucks and cars to share essentials like water, food, encouragement, and companionship. These acts reflect the kindness and unity that define the Australian character, especially during tough times.
Due to the coordinated efforts of Ergon Energy, who served as liaisons between SES and local law enforcement, as well as westbound truck drivers travelling the Miles–Condamine–Dalby route, every guest arrived safely at their destination. Their combined efforts provided a secure way out of Chinchilla.
Thank you to all the guests who called to confirm their safe arrival at their destinations.
We are also humbled with the high volume of our regular and past guests who reached out by phone, text, or email to check on The Laurels. Your kindness and concern mean a lot to us, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Laurels soon.
We offer our support to Chinchilla businesses and residents affected by the floods. It's inspiring how quickly the community has come together to help with recovery.
