For any friends or patrons who are needing transport to David Handran-Smith's funeral this Wednesday, Graham Parr will be driving the 1st Cobargo Scouts bus (no charge) to and from the service which will be held at Clavering Park, Wolumla, from 2pm August 26. The bus will leave the Cobargo Hotel Motel at 12.30pm and pick up at Quaama General Store at 12.45pm, returning after the service for the wake at Cobargo Hotel Motel from 4pm. A great read from our friend Rohan Pike outlining how Canada got on top of its illicit to***co market, and given the problems we are having with not only illicit to***co but now increasingly illicit alcohol, perhaps our politicians should start looking at excise levels and how they drive black markets in our country. Illicit to***co is still ubiquitous in our region (as it is all over Australia), with illicit to***conists located close to where our local politicians have their electorate offices, and even in the towns where they live. If they really cared about their communities you would think that they would be a little more curious and proactive about doing something about them, as not only do they undercut legal businesses, but also sell to kids, deprive Australian Treasury of much-needed revenue and the criminality caused by the trade has led to 6 deaths and over 300 firebombings, ram raids and drive-by shootings around Australia. Very sad to report that one of our beloved regulars Dave Handran-Smith passed away in the early hours of Sunday at the Bega Hospital. Dave never missed Trivia or the Friday night raffles, and was a great longtime supporter of the Cobargo Folk Festival, acting as the Bar Manager for many years and helping our wherever he could. Dave lost his Verona home in the 2019 Bushfires but still found the time to help out others recover at the Showground, and a more caring, friendly soul you would not meet, truly one of nature's gentlemen. Vale Dave 🍻

Life will get harder for Australia's hospitality sector from tomorrow with the Federal government once again lifting alcohol excise in an environment when folks are already doing it tough. Whilst draught beer was given a two year reprieve at the last election, spirits, packaged beer and ready-to-drink products will all jump, with for instance a 700mL bottle of Bundaberg Rum now subject to $34 in excise and GST, roughly half its cost. Our region is now heavily reliant on the hospitality, tourism and experience economy, however having one of the highest levels of alcohol excise in the world (as a comparison NZ has roughly half the level of our taxes) is making it harder for the industry to survive. We are doing our best to ensure a visit to your local pub, club, brewery, winery or restaurant is still an affordable pleasure for everyone, but the Australian Government and Jim Chalmers MP certainly ain't helping!
