Wambenger Lodge

Wambenger Lodge Wambenger Lodge was born out of an old vet clinic premises on the banks of the Collie River and lots of hard work and dedication by the owners.

We were the recipients of a small grant from SWDC which allowed us to up the anti and be a little more luxe.

PET GUESTS

We originally converted our building from a Veterinary Hospital into pet friendly accommodation because it is so needed in our Collie community.

We love hosting pet guests until someone doesn't play fair..

We have been having more and more issues with irresponsible owners, so we have had to update our Pet Guest Policy.

Due to repeated instances of guests not following our house pet rules, we’ve had to update our policy. We are now only able to accommodate pet guests when a refundable deposit of $100 is paid upfront with the booking. See ADD ON'S on our site.

This deposit will be fully returned at the end of the stay, provided there are no issues or damage.

We are no longer taking pet guest bookings through booking.com, only our own site www.wambengerlodge.com or by contacting admin 040891966.

We appreciate your understanding as we work to maintain a comfortable and clean environment for all of our guests including our furry offsiders.

Dog/cat guest per night is $15+GST (max 2 animals per apartment)
Fairy Wren and W***y Wagtail are both pet friendly.

Travelling/moving house with pets can be stressful. Glad we could help Lee out with a smooth move yesterday.

Some info about our namesake from Trails WA.

Here’s a sweet little native animal with a beautiful tail; known by its original Noongar name.

This article is by the well-known WA naturalist Vincent Serventy.

LORE LEGEND
NATURE STUDY
THE AGILE WAMBENGER

LOOKING through a list of the mammals of Western Australia, one sees with depressing frequency the words "believed extinct."

Fortunately this is not the case with the Wambenger.

The early settlers called it the ‘Native Squirrel’ even though the resemblance is only slight. Then came the scientists with ‘Brush Tailed Pouched Mouse’ or ‘Marsupial Rat’. The latest is ‘Brush Tailed Phascogal’ [which means ‘pouched weasel’!]

Mr. L. Glauert has suggested the native name, Wambenger, be used and this seems a happy choice. After all, since we lack the common names built up by thousands of years of tradition, we can at least select wisely in choosing new ones.

For the benefit of those who know the animal, but have not yet managed to give it a name here is a description. In body size it is something of the build of a slender rat with a long tail decorated with a brush-like -ending. The body colour is grey and the brush black.

The various common names will now be more understandable. The illustration will make the description clear.

Its distribution is wide, as it can be found from Southern Queensland through to the South-West of this State. The local reports seem to indicate that it does not live to the north of Perth or further inland than Merredin.

Fortunately it is rather common, and once or twice each year I receive a description to identify which can only fit this animal. The most recent was from a lady who found it moving with great agility over the furniture of her room, for the Wambenger is an active climber and comes into houses in search of food.

It is carnivorous and will eat rats, mice and even fowls. But doubtless the main reason for its being found around houses is the mice which are usually present.

A nest is usually built in some hollow, and E. Troughton, in his book on the "Furred Animals of Australia," mentions the strained feelings in a timber camp when a pound note disappeared. Later it was discovered that a Wambenger had stolen the money for use as a nest lining.

Doubtless this places a black mark against a very interesting animal, but most domestic troubles cannot be blamed on this source and so the Wambenger should be left unharmed if it visits your house in a search for food.

-VINCENT SERVENTY

*****
Modern sources say it’s ’now nearly threatened’.

Wambengers don’t have the true pouch that is found in most other marsupials. Instead, they form temporary folds of skin, sometimes called a "pseudo-pouch", around the mammary glands during pregnancy.
