Last week I did something I have never done before. I visited a tarot reader. She looked the picture. Hair wild and ethereal and the room full of curiosities and spell binding possibilities. One of the cards she pulled out had to do with my past and my relationship with my femininity. Or rather - everyone else’s. My mother used to tell me what a woman should or shouldn’t do. Meaning, I didn’t fit in with the ideal. I cut my hair off in 2000 when I was in London. Oh Jo!, your one true beauty! My mother gritted her teeth. I wasn’t one to wear dresses or even wear much makeup. In some ways I was anti conformist and in other ways was more interested in what was in my mind rather than what I wore. And then when I got married, my husband also had an idea of what he thought I should wear. And so I would wear army jackets and suits and cut my hair asymmetrically and did whatever I wanted. When I finally came out, my best friend explained - why are you dressed like a man! The truth is - I adore my feminine mystique and feel that with most things I wear - my feminine self is expanded upon and given no bounds - even with a tie. Fashion has no rules and if we just so dare - could unlock our reflection to the world around us with authenticity that speaks volumes even before we utter a single word of individuality.

Alaine De Botton recently gave an interview where he spoke of the architecture of solitude and how monasteries were built to allow the cadence of our internal spaces flourish unrestrained.
This is why we need to find forests and cottages and the ocean and spend long periods of time away from the logistics of the grind.

After awhile, our memories become a large Kandinsky like mural full of colour and feeling and without any particular sense of realism. Memories are the paints I use to colour my present thoughts. So rich. So hopeful. So much more layered.
