One of our favourite signs that spring has arrived is seeing the orchids back in bloom 🌸

Throughout Deep Creek National Park, an incredible variety of native orchids begin appearing along the trails and surrounding bushland at this time of year.

Here are just a few you might be lucky enough to spot during a spring stay, as pictured:

1. Leopard Orchid
2. Rabbit Orchid
3. King Spider Orchid
4. Sun Orchid
5. Donkey Orchid
6. Wax Lip Orchid
7. Mayfly Orchid
8. Green-comb Spider Orchid
9. Gnat Orchid
10. Greenhood Orchid

Which one’s your favourite?

🦎 Creature Feature: Shingleback Lizard

Also known as the Sleepy Lizard or Pinecone Lizard, the Shingleback (Tiliqua rugosa) is one of Australia’s most recognisable reptiles.

A close relative of the familiar blue-tongue, they’re easily recognised by their large, rough scales, which give them their famed pinecone-like appearance.

Their short, rounded tail closely resembles the shape of their head – a clever adaptation thought to confuse predators.

But perhaps the most surprising thing about Shinglebacks is their love life.

💕 Unlike most lizards, Shinglebacks form long-term monogamous pairs. They spend much of the year alone, but come breeding season, males seek out the same female to reunite year after year.

Females also give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. It’s an impressive feat, given that a litter can weigh around a third as much as their mother!

As spring approaches and breeding season begins, keep an eye out for these little lizards basking in sunny spots throughout Deep Creek. You might even be lucky enough to catch a pair together.

Happy spotting!
