This YouTuber and Instagram adventure filmmaker was threatened with fines over his treks into Tasmania's wilderness areas. Now, he has been issued with a new "commercial filming licence" application β€” which he says he'll ignore because the strict conditions will kill his business.

You may have seen some recent media and social media coverage regarding the guidelines for commercial filming activities on land managed by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service.

Specifically, there has been commentary around the permits required for creating content for publication on social media channels and whether the existing rules remain fit for purpose.

Under the National Parks and Reserves Management Act 2002, any person who undertakes an activity on reserved land and earns an income from that activity must apply for a business licence.

It’s important to note that the rules governing the use of reserved land are in place to protect the natural and cultural values of sensitive environments, such as the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

PWS takes its responsibilities as a land manager seriously and our staff work tirelessly to both protect the environment and promote its values. This means that we aim to limit off-track walker impacts and prevent the unplanned expansion of the walking track system.

Managing environmental impacts and supporting visitor safety are two of our key priorities.

We are aware of the feedback from some content creators who believe the business licences issued to them are too restrictive. These are standard conditions that are applied across applications for business licences of this nature.

Further, the licences issued indicate that should the content creators wish to engage in activity outside of that authorised through the standard licence, for example accessing unformed tracks, further application can be made to PWS to enable the activity to be assessed for impact on the natural and cultural values of the area.

This is a simple process that is open and available to all business licence holders.

PWS welcomes activity which promotes our parks and reserves system, including areas which are outside of our national parks, that are free to visit and help to support the dispersal of visitors across the reserve estate.

We have started a review of the commercial filming permit process to ensure it better reflects not only traditional forms of commercial filming, but also accounts for contemporary operators, such as online content creators.
