Tasmania has many heritage buildings, some are private residences while others are open to public.

Within an easy drive of Deloraine there are a number of heritage properties which are accessible to the public. These include Woolmers, Brickendon and Entally Estates. Another renown property is Clarendon Estate, which is located about 8km southeast of Evandale and about 55 minutes by car east of Deloraine.

Clarendon, run by the National Trust, is one of Australia’s most imposing and romantic pastoral homesteads. The house was built in 1838 by James Cox, wool grower and merchant, is furnished to the 1838-1850 period.

The house is set in 7 hectares of parklands adjacent to the South Esk River and has a number of outbuildings. One of the outbuildings is the home of the Australian Fly Fishing Museum.

Clarendon is a great place to visit to learn about the property's history or for a self guided tour of the gardens and outbuildings.

Deloraine also has a number of heritage properties, many which are private residences. It is however possible to walk the streets passing some of these heritage properties, using guided maps from the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre.

For the anthophiles (flower lovers) amongst us, Tasmania has many local flowers shows during the spring and summer months. On the weekend of the 7 and 8 February 2026, the Launceston Horticultural Society held its annual summer flower show at the Evandale Memorial Hall.

Evandale is located approximately 45 minutes east of Deloraine. It another beautiful town to visit when travelling to Tasmania. The town has many events which occur through the year and include flower shows, Evandale Penny Farthing race, the Evandale Sunday Markets (held every Sunday from 8am to 1:30pm) and The John Glover Art Prize (held on the March long weekend).

Evandale also has many beautiful heritage buildings as well is about 10km north of the National Trust's Clarendon Estate, where tours of the homestead can be carried out.

If you are visiting Tasmania, festivals and events occurring during your visit can be found on the Discover Tasmania website/app. Local events can also be found on the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre website. On check-in, we also provide an overview of events we are aware of to all our guests.

Taking a day trip to Evandale is another reason to stay more than a day at Blakes Manor Self Contained Heritage Accommodation in Deloraine.

Tasmania has over 250 waterfall walks, and with some of these in easy reach of Deloraine.

A great waterfall to visit is Bastion Cascades. It is located within the Meander Forest Reserve, 30 minutes south of Deloraine. The walk starts at the abandoned quarry at the end of Quarry Road. The walk to the cascades can be done as a circuit to include Stone Hut and several overhanging sandstone rock shelves. The circuit walk tees off about 15 minutes from the quarry. The circuit takes about 4-5 hours return and is rated as moderate to hard level of difficultly. Clothing for any weather conditions should be taken as well as adequate water/food and good walking shoes as the track is uneven in part.

The track is relatively well defined and has track markers installed at regular intervals. Even so, it is worthwhile downloading a GPX (GPS file) just in case one needs it on the walk. We chose to walk the circuit anti-clockwise, or visited Stone Hut first before descending to the cascades. The rock overhangs on the circuit track add a unique landscape feature to the walk.

There are good views of the cascades from the bottom. There is also opportunity to see the cascades from near the top, by following an unmarked tracks at the top of the cascades to a rock shelf (track is to the left looking downstream). Extreme care is needed on the rock shelf as there is a significant drop-off and it is narrow, damp and slippery in parts.

At lower elevations there is temperate rainforest common in the Meander Forest Reserve, with the upper sections in more open tea tree, native waratahs and snow gums forests. It is a great walk to do in any season (it is important to check TasALERT for any local warnings and weather forecasts prior to departing). In summer if the day is warm, rock pools in Bastion Creek make a great places to cool off.

It is another beautiful waterfall walk to do, a great place to have a picnic lunch and to soak up the wilderness of The Great Western Tiers.

Tasmania has a cool temperate climate with four distinct seasons. It offers the climate to grow beautiful gardens. Renown gardens include the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Brickendon Estate, Woolmers Estate, Entally House, Emu Valley Rhododendron Gardens, Tasmanian Arboretum, Wychwood, Villarett and the list goes on.

Throughout the year, some private gardens are open to the public, where the modest entry fees raise money for local charities or community service organisations. Recently, in Longford, about 30 minutes drive away, was the Longford Blooms open gardens festival.

Longford Blooms is run over a Saturday and Sunday on the third weekend in November, where there are around a dozen private gardens in and around Longford are opened to the public. Being spring, blossoms are in full bloom, making a spectacular sight. There is also opportunities to buy plants to take home as well as gather idea's for one's own garden.

Tasmania is known for its wildlife and is often seen when travelling around the state. When visiting Deloraine, local wildlife that can be readily seen includes platypuses, Tasmanian nativehens, Bennett's wallabies, possums, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, superb fairywrens and the list goes on.

Lake Augusta on Tasmania’s Central Plateau (about a 75 minute drive south of Deloraine), is a great place to visit to take in the beautiful scenery, as well as for wildlife spotting. Wombats are common and can often be seen during the day.

Lake Augusta is also a great place to do some walks. In the winter months, access roads in the vicinity of Lake Augusta are closed and can be easily walked.

One easy walk is to Double Lagoon. From the locked gate on Lake Augusta Road, it takes about 1.5-2 hours return. The walk is on a formed access road and is very easy to do. The locality is a great place to do some bird watching, as well as looking out for wombats and wallabies. Double Lagoon also has resident platypus as well as Black swans. The area is also renown for fly fishing.

There are also grassed areas adjacent to Double Lagoon which makes a great place to take in the scenery, have a cuppa or a bite to eat.

Visiting Tasmania’s Central Plateau is another reason to stay more than a day at Blakes Manor in Deloraine.
