We are often asked "what are the lights across the water" here it is Useless Loop

At Useless Loop, work means living in one of Australia’s most isolated company towns, beside a solar salt operation on Western Australia’s Shark Bay.

Around 130 people live there, mostly employees and their families. Shark Bay Salt provides housing, recreation facilities and a primary school. Access is restricted to residents and approved visitors.

Work revolves around 37 crystalliser ponds, a washing plant, stockpiles and a loading port. Crews manage brine, harvest salt, maintain machinery and prepare roughly 1.3 million tonnes annually for export, mostly to Asia.

Summer temperatures average around 33°C, coastal winds are common, and the white salt reflects sunlight fiercely. Remoteness is the test. Denham sits only 25 kilometres away across the water but about 250 kilometres away by road.

Days off can look like a holiday brochure. Fishing, boating, swimming and empty beaches are on the doorstep. Residents can explore Shark Bay’s marine life, camp, dive or visit Monkey Mia, Shell Beach and François Peron National Park when travel allows.

The village creates entertainment through sport, school activities and community gatherings.

Useless Loop offers little anonymity, shopping choice or quick escape. Yet few mine workers can finish a shift beside turquoise water and a World Heritage coastline.

We had such a fantastic stay at Oceanside Village and honestly didn't want to leave.

We stayed in one of the beachside villas and the location was just perfect. We live over an hour from the beach at home, so being able to walk across the road every morning and watch the ocean, go for a swim or just enjoy the view was something we really appreciated.

The villa had absolutely everything we needed and then some. It was comfortable, spotlessly clean and really well set up. The laundry facilities, washing lines, BBQ area and pool were all a huge bonus, especially travelling with my two boys after long days exploring Shark Bay.

It really felt like a home away from home and made our holiday so easy and relaxing. We made some amazing memories here and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Oceanside Village to anyone visiting Shark Bay.

We'll definitely be back. Thanks for helping make our family holiday such a great one!
