Have you ever seen a blue kangaroo paw before? π
Kings Park and Botanic Garden 's lead plant breeder Digby Growns said the stunning new colour was discovered during research into making more disease resistant versions of existing species of kangaroo paws.
"Over about three generations of breeding, one of the progeny came up with a blue flower. I remember walking around the corner of the nursery and seeing it and being totally blown away by it," he said.
"Itβs a shorter, lower growing kangaroo paw than most people would be used to, maybe two thirds the size of a normal red and green for instance."
Mr Growns says the blue kangaroo paws would be available for members of the general public to purchase next year through the Friends of Kings Park plant sale.
"This year for the first time we had one that was disease tolerant enough to be able to commercially release, we donβt want to commercially release one that is just going to drop dead. They will be available to the general public in about Autumn next year," he said.
