Late on Tuesday evening, Tasmanians will have the chance to witness a spectacular total eclipse of the Moon… if the skies stay clear!

A lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow in space. Because the Moon’s orbit is slightly tilted, this doesn’t happen every month, making it a special event when it does.

Total lunar eclipses are often called “blood moons” because the Moon can glow a beautiful coppery-red colour as sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere. According to Dr Martin George from the Ulverstone Planetarium at Hive, the Moon won’t pass through the centre of the shadow, meaning part of it may appear lighter than the rest.

🕗 Key times (AEDT):
• Eclipse begins: 8.50 pm
• Total eclipse: 10.04 pm – 11.03 pm
• Ends: 12.17 am

Lunar eclipses are safe and fun to watch, and even better with binoculars.

The eclipse will be visible across Australia, with the eastern states getting the best view. If you missed the last one due to cloudy weather, this is your last chance for a while because the next total lunar eclipse visible from Tasmania won’t be until January 2029.

✨ Keep your eyes on the sky and enjoy the show!
